New COVID-19 case in 1Utama Shopping Centre
Malaysia has been seeing better days on the COVID-19 front. But recent updates from the Ministry of Health show that it is still a cause of concern, with the highest number of daily new COVID-19 recorded since the pandemic reached our shores in January 2020.
Along with a list of shopping malls that have come forward announcing a COVID-19 positive case in its building, 1 Utama Shopping Centre in Petaling Jaya announced on 5th October 2020 that a staff from Mac City Service Centre has tested positive for COVID-19.

In a lengthy Facebook post, 1 Utama’s management team shared a COVID-19 public advisory announcing the news of a COVID-19 positive case that involved an employee of its Mac City Service Centre on the 2nd floor of 1 Utama’s New Wing.
According to the post, the staff last visited the mall on 30th September. Since 1st October, the staff has been on leave and had not returned to the mall.

Contact tracing records showed that the staff had recorded a temperature reading of below 37.5°C – a temperature that indicated that he did not have a fever – before he entered the mall. He is now being treated at a hospital for his symptoms, while other employees of Mac City Service Centre have also been placed on quarantine as a safety measure.

This is the first recorded COVID-19 case at the shopping mall. It comes after a recent incident on 28th September, where 1 Utama had to debunk COVID-19 rumours that said one of its maintenance employees was tested positive for COVID-19 on its Facebook page.

In the same announcement, 1 Utama also reassured Malaysians who frequent this massive mall that they have taken extra public safety measures to curb this isolated case at its premises.
The measures include sanitisation of Mac City Service Centre and its closure until further notice, as well as sanitisation of public areas in the mall, such as lifts, escalators, toilets and benches.
