These past few days, Malaysians have been waking up to a slew of good news – from decreasing numbers of new COVID-19 cases to reduced red zones districts across Malaysia. While things are indeed looking up, our country’s battle against the pandemic is far from over.
Resources have already been spreading thin from weeks ago when the country was reporting high numbers of new COVID-19 patients, and the problem still persists.
In light of the situation, fellow countrymen have been lending a helping hand by voluntarily producing protective gear in order to aid our medical personnel’s fight against the virus. This time round, a talented 9-year-old girl has joined the fight and has already sewn 100 sets of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Produces 1 full set in an hour
According to Astro Awani, Nur Afia Qistina Zamzuri is a skilled seamstress at just the tender age of 9 after learning to sew since the age of 5.
Thanks to her mother’s early guidance, Afia has honed her skills over the years and is now able to produce 1 full set of PPE in just an hour.

According to her mother, Hasnah Hud, all of the PPE the pair are producing now are entirely sewn by Zamzuri herself. Once done, she hands them to Hud to neaten things up.
Determined to help after learning about COVID-19 dangers
Hud shared that she explained the COVID-19 pandemic to Zamzuri using simplerterms so that she could better comprehend the situation, as well as the risks that are associated with the virus.
After telling Zamzuri about her wishes to sew PPE units to combat the shortage of equipment and gears in hospitals, Zamzuri, the eldest child of 3 was quick to jump on board.

It was also possible that the young child was already aware of the difficulties our country’s frontliners have to endure during this trying time, as her uncle is currently serving in the military.
Malaysian children join in on the fight
Zamzuri’s inspiring story just goes to show that Malaysians from all backgrounds and walks of life are banding together in this battle against a worldwide pandemic. While it’s unfortunate that a child her age has to experience a time like this, we’re absolutely heartened by her determination to help our frontliners.
It takes a lot of strength and perseverance to sit through 100 hours by the sewing machine, so hats off to Zamzuri for all her hard work.
