Aiskrim Pulut in Kampung Baru
Ice cream is usually associated with summer, but in Malaysia – a country with hot and humid weather all year round – that’s not quite the case. For us Malaysians, this sweet treat is one of the go-to desserts to combat the heat, no matter what time or day of the year.
We visited Aiskrim Pulut in Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur, an unassuming roadside stall that lets you enjoy delicious coconut ice cream with pulut, or glutinous rice, for as low as RM2.
Homemade coconut ice cream with glutinous rice from RM2
If you are about to grab that tub of chocolate ice cream from the fridge, you might just want to reconsider it. Aiskrim Pulut in KL’s laidback Kampung Baru serves homemade Coconut Ice Cream Pulut that comes in two sizes: small (RM2) and large (RM5).
Each cup starts with a coconut ice cream base, followed by sticky glutinous rice. Then, as more scoops of ice cream are layered over the rice, condensed milk is drizzled on top for a dash of sweet creaminess.
Finally, a generous amount of peanut chunks are sprinkled over the trio to complete the dessert.
In addition to savouring this delectable dessert on its own, you can also try the Roti (RM3) version that has the delicious goodness sandwiched in a sliced fluffy bun.
Other than the roadside stall, the vendors also run a small and cosy shop nearby for customers to enjoy the desserts in a more comfortable environment.
Here’s what we thought
We got ourselves a large cup of their Ice Cream Pulut, which was as big as the palm of our hand.
As the velvety ice cream effortlessly melted in our mouth, we chewed through the sticky glutinous rice and let it fill our tastebuds with all the coconut flavour it had soaked up. Then, amidst the softness was the satisfying crunch from the peanuts chunks, adding a twist of textures that unfolded with each bite of the dessert.
While the coconut ice cream per se didn’t carry a super rich flavour on its own, the condensed milk more than made up for that, resulting in a well-balanced treat that wasn’t tooth-achingly sweet.
And, don’t sleep on the peanut chunks because the aromatic nuttiness elevated the entire dessert like a charm.
We also ordered the Roti, which tasted similar to the original version but with extra fluffiness from the buns. If anything, it evoked our childhood memories of having a cold ice cream sandwich by the street on a hot day.
