Wanted to buy aloe vera gel

Aloe vera gel is a holy grail and permanent addition on nearly everyone’s dressers as it works as a remedy for many skin concerns – from sunburns to dry skin. While aloe vera is a popular ingredient in skincare products, its soothing and moisturising properties also come in handy for other less – ahem – innocent reasons, as a Malaysian Twitter user found out.

On 20th January 2020, a Twitter user who goes by the name Eleanor shared a post about a hilarious incident that happened in her family. She recounted that her mum bought a bottle of Durex Play Aloe Vera Pleasure Gel thinking that it was just a normal bottle of aloe vera gel.

“It feels weird after applying”

Eleanor’s younger sibling, who has dry skin, applied the “gel” on her legs after their mum gave it to her. She then told her sister that “it feels weird after applying” because, well… it isn’t gel but lube.

Eleanor went on to elaborate in her tweet that her mum would buy anything as long as it has the 2 words “aloe vera” plastered across the product.

Malaysian netizens were quick to spot this humorous tweet on their feed, and it quickly went viral, with over 10,000 retweets and likes and counting.

Putting up the once-“used” lube for sale

And the funny story didn’t stop there. Because later in the same evening, Eleanor put up a plea in her Twitter thread that was already blowing up with comments from amused Malaysians asking if anyone was interested to take the lube off her hands.

Her tweet in Malay can be translated as: “Does anyone want to buy the aloe vera [?] Nobody in this house is ever going to find any use for it lol [crying emoji]”

About 3 hours after her tweet, she actually found a buyer for the lube! Eleanor even expressed her gratitude towards the Twitter community who helped solve her distressing, albeit amusing, predicament.

Eleanor’s tweet can be translated as:

Weh, someone actually bought it [crying emojis] I’m so touched with this Twitter community! Thank you friends! [crying and heart emojis]”

Netizens share hilarious anecdotes of their own

In a case of humour begets humour, Malaysians who could relate to Eleanor’s mum all too well shared their similarly funny stories too.

Twitter user @zulaykhayusuf shared a story of her late grandmother who went to Watsons intending to buy shampoo but came back with feminine wash instead. Being the good granddaughter she was, she told her grandmother that it wasn’t shampoo for the head but for the area “below” instead.

Another netizen @hdytllly recounted a childhood experience where she picked up a packet of condoms by the cashier because she thought it was candy. She said she was sure because of its cute packaging. She then received a scolding by her sister when she saw her holding the packets of condoms.

Twitter user Farah’s experience at a Watsons store is also as funny, though it left us with a rather unsettling image. She said that she saw a customer who smeared lube all over her face because she probably thought that the lube testers in Watsons were skincare serums.

Farah said “I don’t know if I should cry or what” – which we totally get because we wouldn’t know how to react either if we were in her shoes.

A 60-year-old mum’s honest mistake

While most netizens saw the humour in the honest mistake Eleanor had to defend her 60-year-old mum from a handful of netizens who had harsh things to say. She said that we can’t expect our middle-aged parents to know about Durex’s range of products, especially when packaging and labels can get so misleading – which we definitely agree. To be fair, the lube was made from aloe vera and it is technically a gel.

Still, keyboard warriors aside, we’re just heartened to see how the Twitter community came together to help ensure that the lube was not wasted. The anecdotes from other Twitter users who related to Eleanor’s predicament brought a few laughs to everyone too.
