Ben’s Cookies From England Opens First Outlet In Malaysia, Has 12 Flavours Of Soft & Gooey Chocolate Cookies

Ben’s Cookies at The Exchange TRX in KL

As it turns out, Ben’s Cookies is not run by Ben. The sweet journey of Ben’s Cookies began in England in 1983, when chocoholic-cum-cookery-writer Helge Rubinstein decided to start a cookie business and named it after her son, Ben.

Once a modest stall at Oxford’s covered market, the cookie shop is now a globally recognised brand with outlets across the world – including its first store in Malaysia at The Exchange TRX.

We knew we couldn’t miss it, so we dropped by the store to bring you this review.

Soft & gooey chocolate cookies mixed with nuts & fruits

Ben’s Cookies’ forte lies in making soft and hefty chocolate cookies with a delightful blend of nuts and fruits. It is the snack shop that should be in your England itinerary – and now a place to drop by whenever you find yourself at The Exchange TRX in Kuala Lumpur.

To ensure a consistently good taste and quality of cookies, every outlet – including the one in Malaysia – uses a dough mix imported directly from their shop in Oxford, England. Toppings and baking each piece fresh then takes place in the back kitchen at each outlet.

The cookies on display were panned quickly during our visit to Ben’s Cookies. Customers queued up and left with several bags of cookies, but new and hot batches filled up the empty spots right away. That’s how the shop constantly smelt like butter and chocolate.

There are 12 flavours to explore here, with each cookie priced RM9.90. A box of 4, 7, or 8 pieces of your selected cookies starts from RM45.90.

Here’s our verdict

Of course, we had to start with the shop’s classic flavours: Double and Triple Chocolate Chunk. The latter came with additional white chocolate.

The thick chocolate spread inside revealed itself when we broke the cookies in half. They were pleasantly moist and soft – almost akin to a slightly crunchier version of brownies.

What stood out for us was the well-balanced flavour. Multiple types of chocolate were generously fused into each piece of cookie and yet they weren’t cloyingly sweet – even to the last bite.

Next up was the Cranberry White Chocolate, adorned with dried cranberries and a white chocolate spread.

We were sceptical about true love but this was love at first bite. The cookie was fruity and tart with an unexpected hint of tea, which made the whole piece so addictive.

At this point during our visit, we were already on a sugar high. But we decided to indulge in one more piece – the Caramelized Crunch.

Like its name suggests, this cookie was less gooey than the previous ones, leaning towards a crunchier exterior. The taste resembled Lotus Biscoff, carrying notes of brown sugar and cinnamon.

Overall, it was yet another delightful pick.

First Ben’s Cookies in Malaysia

If good quality had a form, it would mirror the cookies from Ben’s Cookies. They are slightly pricier than regular cookies, but Ben’s Cookies doesn’t deliver the ordinary. You are treated to an edible promise of freshness and rich chocolate taste, accompanied by an enticing waft of butter.

We couldn’t recommend only one flavour to you – everything was good in our experience.
