It’s a known fact that you can’t cover all the best food places in Kepong in just a day. Compared to the likes of Pudu and Cheras, the town remains a relatively undiscovered food hub bursting with all sorts of foods – from Michelin-starred bak kut teh restaurants to nameless roadside rojak stalls.

1. San Ching San Hokkien Mee

San Ching San Hokkien Mee is one of those restaurants that’s confident enough to hinge their entire establishment on their signature dish. Not only is their Hokkien Mee (from RM10/pax) featured in their restaurant name, but it also appears prominently in the signboard above the shop.

The dish may not appear outstanding upon first impression. But the taste more than makes up for it. Dark, sticky sauce drenches the chewy noodles, accompanied by a few prawns, bits of pork, and some cabbage.

Enjoy the star dish with other noodles here like Loh Mee and Cantonese Kuey Teow, all priced from RM10 for a single serving, or sides such as Fried Chicken Wings (RM7.80/pair) and Ginger Lala (RM18).

Restaurant Fu Lai Dim Sum has been operating in Bandar Menjalara, Kepong, for more than a decade, satisfying the tummies of loyal patrons looking to enjoy dim sum as early as 6.30am and as late as 2am.

The restaurant serves classic dim sum alongside more unique offerings like Otak Mai and Fried Shrimp balls. But ask a local patron at the next table what they’re here for, and they’ll likely answer the char siew pau, the lo mai gai, or the chee cheong fun.

3. New Ban Lee Restaurant


Handmade noodles served different ways

For yellow noodles without that strong alkaline aftertaste, head to New Ban Lee Restaurant near Kepong’s popular FRIM nature reserve. They make thick, springy sang mee from scratch, and serve the slurpable noodles five different ways – dry, spicy, clear soup, curry, or a mix of any two.

If you’re not sure what to get, patrons have rave reviews for the dry version with deep soya sauce gravy and heaps of minced meat, as well as the curry broth that’s rich and flavourful, with a bit of a kick.

A small bowl of the noodles is priced RM7, with fried beancurd skin (fucuk), fish paste and balls, and three condiments – dried chilli, sambal belacan, and green pickled chillies – served on the side.

4. Weng Kee Roasted Duck

It’s almost impossible to drop by Weng Kee Roasted Duck and not find a snaking queue at the stall. And that’s before the 3rd generation owners are finished unloading the freshly roasted ducks from their van.

While the stall only does takeaways, this doesn’t deter loyal and curious patrons from driving over from near and far for their roast duck and char siew.

A whole roast duck at Weng Kee is priced at a pretty reasonable RM68, with containers of duck feet roll (ngap keok pau) also a popular order. While already juicy, the tender duck meat comes with a variety of dipping sauces such as chilli and sweet plum.

5. Kepong Baru Rojak

Kepong Baru Rojak doesn’t actually have an official name even though they have been serving Indian-style rojak for decades. But they’ve been doing a good job of attracting patrons near and far for years regardless.

Located in Kepong Baru, near the popular morning market and opposite a kindergarten, the stall serves reasonably priced Rojak Biasa for RM7, or with sotong for RM9.

They’ve nailed the beloved Malaysian dish to a tee, with sweet kuah that has a mild kick and crispy fritters that are extra crisp, all  drenched in their beloved peanut sauce.


Their humble cart stall is located next to an ABC ais kacang and durian stall.

6. Fat Boon ABC Ais Kacang

In Kepong, Fat Boon ABC Ais Kacang is where locals head to for the locally loved ABC that’s priced at just RM6. However, you’ll find another dessert here that often steals the show – the Yam Sago (RM11).

A mound of shaved ice is topped with an eye-catching thick, sweet, and purple yam sauce that resembles more of a paste, as well as chunks of yam and green Cendol jelly.

Step into the discreet restaurant, and you’ll see patrons dining on their signature Chicken Rice that’s praised for maintaining a consistent taste over the years.

You can order chicken breast or wings (RM9/plate), and enjoy the rice with side dishes such as bean sprouts (from RM2.50) and braised tofu (RM3/piece).

Mama Mee is the spot to head to when you’re craving deep-flavoured Thai noodles with fresh seafood. This well-known restaurant in Kepong Baru has amassed a loyal customer following, being one of the OG spots in KL to get leveled-up Thai Mama noodles.

Their signature Mama Creamy Tom Yam Noodles can be ordered with ping pong-sized meatballs (RM12.80) or seafood (RM14.80) like prawns and squid. If you want the best of both worlds, opt for the Deluxe (RM16.80) instead.

When it comes to a steamboat feast that’ll leave you happily stuffed on a variety of meats and seafood, QQ Steamboat won’t disappoint. This well-known all-you-can-eat restaurant in Kepong has over 200 different steamboat and grill ingredients, including chilli crab and black pepper lamb.

If you’re here mainly for the sought-after chilli crab, platters of this are refilled every hour during service. Patrons come here for the free-flow of faux shark fin soup as well, with the dessert buffet spread of fresh fruits, candies, and ice cream being another huge draw.

Fill up your steamboat with classic items such as luncheon meat, seafood tofu, cockles, prawns, and blue crabs. You can take your pick of four soups from the six that they offer – chicken, herbal, pepper, and tom yam, or mala and tomato for an extra RM14.90.

Tucked inside Keng Nam Hai kopitiam in Metro Prima Kepong, just across AEON Mall, is the Hennessy XO Seafood Noodle food stall. They’ve been capturing local attention for their well-bodied fish head broth that’s tinged with a good dash of – you guessed it – Hennessy XO.

This signature dish, priced RM18, is praised by patrons for balancing the strong alcohol of the cognac with fresh prawns and clams.

11. Ming Ji Wan Tan Mee

An oldie and a goodie in Kepong, Ming Ji Wan Tan Mee has been serving patrons satisfying plates of wantan mee since 1985 from the porch of the owner’s house. At just RM9, the wantan mee executes each seemingly simple component of the dish well – gravy-drenched springy noodles, lean char siew slices, and fat soupy wontons.

Have a chat with the owner, and he’ll likely recommend you order a plate of the store’s famous prawn dumplings (RM2.30/pc). The sui kow envelops minced meat and large chunks of prawns in delicate wonton wrap.

12. Lieong Kee Bae Good Teh

You’ll find that a good number of bak kut teh restaurants recommended by KL folks are located in Kepong. One in particular that locals flock to is Lieong Kee Bae Good Teh, which has a distinctly deep, herbaceous and garlicky BKT broth that’s on the sweet side.

This family-run restaurant, which has been operating since 1977, serves both soup and dry claypot bak kut teh. You can fill your claypot with lean pork meat and cuts like tendon, neck, and kidneys, or additional ingredients such as fuchok and mushrooms.

A meal here usually costs around RM25 per diner.

There are only so many places to enjoy carbs straight out of the oven. But that’s what you’ll get at K.L Bakery & Confectionery Supplier, a casual bakery that supplies breads, buns, cakes, cookies, and other confectionery items to bakeries around Klang Valley.

At their factory in Jinjang Utara, you can take your pick of a wide variety of baked goods straight off oven trays, at affordable prices. The plethora of choices can be a tad overwhelming, but expect to also find classic local bakery offerings such as sausage rolls, pizza buns, coconut buns, and more.

14. Kedai Kopi Fong

Besides steamboat and bak kut teh, Kepong also has its share of restaurants serving lei cha, a traditional Hakka dish that pairs a variety of toppings with rice and mint-green tea soup.

Kedai Kopi Fong is a spot that lets you indulge in fragrant Thunder Tea, or lei cha, with options to have a base of brown rice or spinach noodles for RM11, or white rice for RM10.

The cha soup is concentrated, with strong notes of mint and basil. It complements the other ingredients that go over the bed of hot rice well, including long beans, preserved vegetables, dried prawns, peanuts, and choy sum.

15. Sam Kan Chong

Sam Kan Chong is another oldie on this list. The noodle shop in Jinjang has been serving customers satisfying bowls of pork ball noodles since 1954, with many locals dubbing it the birthplace of the noodle dish.

They even supply their “pillow” pork balls and smokey sausages to other stalls.

16. Norway Salmon Fish Head Noodles

A regular bowl of fish head noodles uses grouper or flounder fish. But more restaurants in Klang Valley are getting innovative with the protein option, adding salmon to the milky mix. One of these places is Norway Salmon Fish Head Noodles, a popular noodle shop in Jinjang that serves reasonably priced Salmon Head (RM12) and Fillet (RM15) fish noodles.

The broth is perfectly milky – not so creamy that it’ll make you feel jelak. You’ll find a mild tartness from the tomatoes, but you can opt to spice up your noodles by adding chilli. As for the salmon, it gets perfectly deep-fried before it’s placed over the thick vermicelli noodles.

For desserts to warm the soul, KTZ Food is a 30-year-old establishment that specialises in tong sui. Located along Kepong’s famous Wai Sek Kai, the dessert shop has over 10 types of tong sui, priced RM3.60 per bowl. They include the best-selling black sesame and classics like red bean.

We recommend the Peanut Butter – a smooth peanut paste that glides smoothly down your throat, and is not overly sweet.
