New openings have been relentless in Klang Valley. It’s only the 3rd month of the year, but we’ve already seen a constant and varied list of eateries flinging their doors open to the hungry and the curious. 1. Ola

Ola might just be the prettiest cafe that popped up on our radar in February. Some would say, it’s a dream.
Spanning 3 storeys, the new frozen yoghurt cafe in Pasar Seni welcomes diners to pause and get their “head in the clouds” – figuratively and literally speaking. With their dreamy blue-and-white space, complemented by fresh flowers on tables and quirky decor elements like cloud-shaped interior wall cutouts, this will be a simple task.

Indulge in Ola’s bread-and-butter fro-yo, available in two flavours – original or peach – and in three sizes with varying amounts of toppings and sauces from RM13.90 a cup. Take your pick of sweet garnishes from over the counter, including Oreo, dragonfruit, and cornflakes, to sweeten things up further.

2. Warabimochi Kamakura

Warabimochi Kamakura needs little to no introduction to the Japanese. The warabimochi speciality shop runs over 50 stores nationwide. They’ve since expanded with branches throughout Asia, including their latest store in Malaysia at KL’s vibey APW Bangsar.

While the pop-up will only be around for 2 months, the Japanese dessert-drink chain plans to open permanent shops in KL in the near future. For now, sweet tooths can sink their teeth into the star Warabimochi (from RM26/5pcs) with a generous coating of nutty, roasted soyabean flour and a pour of thick kuromitsu syrup.

3. Luo Ma Claypot

For tongue-tingling Sichuan dishes cooked to bubbling and sizzling-hot perfection in claypots, turn to Luo Ma Claypot in SS15. They’re a spinoff of Luo Ma Sha Guo from Chengdu, with a chef from China at the helm, so you know they take their spices and hot pots seriously.

Your order will start with a choice of main served in a claypot that comfortably feeds two, as rice is served free-flow style at the restaurant alongside preserved cabbage and iced sour plum juice. 4. Rawtee Sandwiches

After popping up at several bazaars in Klang Valley, Rawtee Sandwiches has settled down with a permanent shop in Bukit Bintang in February. The Muslim-owned, Italian-inspired deli takes pride in serving hearty focaccia sandwiches packed with halal-sourced meats and fresh vegetables.

5. Niko Neko Matcha
New branch in Mont Kiara
The local-favourite Niko Neko Matcha is now brewing at Mont Kiara’s The Met. While dubbed the 5.0 store, their third KL outlet makes the most of a corner in the building’s lobby, offering their signature matcha drinks and desserts, brewing equipment, and a handful of seats by large windows for their patrons.
Order from the same lineup of matcha speciality drinks (from RM12) with dairy milk alternatives and melt-on-the-tongue burnt cheesecakes (RM24/slice) done in collaboration with local cakery BASK.

6. Clato

Clato is a new hideout in TTDI where patrons are welcomed to have a slow morning, sipping on coffee and forking up beloved breakfast staples with jazz music playing in the background.

Glitch’s menu covers variations of salads and breakfast bowls, opening as early as 7.30am on the weekdays to feed early birds. But for a local twist on Iberian-inspired flavours, try the bocadillos such as the signature The Glitch (RM20) which sandwiches satay chicken and kuah kacang between a chiabatta roll, and the Kimi (RM16) with turkey ham and elemental cheese.

8. Airplane Mode
New space in SS3

Airplane Mode has spread their wings, moving out from a shared space with a Japanese eatery in PJ’s Damansara Perdana to their own shop at SS3. Helmed by a passionate veteran barista, the coffee shop is back to brewing speciality coffee and a selection of curated coffee quenchers for loyal and new patrons.

The Hand Brew Coffee (from RM20) is a must-order for aficionados and casual drinkers of coffee, as you’ll get to select your beans or get recommendations from helpful baristas behind the bar.
For something more adventurous, the curated coffees are worth considering too – the Black Tonic (RM16) pairs housemade lemonade with espresso while the Golden Peach (RM13) mixes peach, passion fruit, honey, and cold brew infused with Earl Grey.

9. 103 Coffee
New branch in Puchong
After over a decade of satisfying patrons with speciality coffee and cosy apartment sensibilities at their outlets, Bangsar’s 103 Coffee has opened their first branch in Selangor in Puchong. With an award-winning crew behind their brews, you can expect nothing less than stellar coffee to pair with their menu of all-day brunch.

10. No. 27
New industrial-chic cafe in Petaling Street

No. 27 looks deceivingly small on the outside. The new industrial-chic cafe appears to occupy just half of a corner shoplot when you stumble upon it in Petaling Street. But step inside, and you’ll discover that their 1st-floor space is bright and airy, with plenty of seats – including bar ones – overlooking an open kitchen.

Though a new kid on the block, No. 27 has already been earning praise from patrons for their Katong Laksa (RM19.50), which features springy noodles swimming in a coconut curry broth with prawns, chicken, and daum kesum.

Bangsar’s Since Then has transformed a warehouse into a bright, airy, and spacious cafe, with industrial charms left intact courtesy of the zinc walls and bare concrete floors that complement the light wood furnishings well.

When it comes to food, Since Then surprises with their innovative takes on the classics.

2. Katsu Katsu

Katsu Katsu is the latest Japanese restaurant to join The Table at Isetan. The spot brings a slice of Osaka’s kushikatsu culture to KL, offering a wide array of deep-fried skewered meat (from RM8), seafood (from RM12), and vegetables (from RM5) to enjoy with crisp Kirin beer and sake for dinner.
Some highlights include mentaiko pork, unagi, and even banana.

We can never have enough places to get our daily caffeine boost. With China’s Luckin Coffee opening their first store in the country at Sunway Pyramid, and more stores planned for Klang Valley, we’ll have another coffee shop chain to get our hands on affordable brews in our neighbourhoods.

Damansara Height’s popular Croisserie has relocated to a new space just around the corner from their old spot. While parking remains a hassle, there are now a blend of indoor and outdoor seats at the cafe, so you can grab a seat more easily to savour their range of delectable French bakes.

1. Chicken & Beer
Fried chicken and beer specialists in PJ
Chicken and beer is an unbeatable combo, akin to peanut butter and jelly on toast – think sinking your teeth into golden-crispy chicken and washing down each bite with crisp beer. That’s exactly what you’ll get at Chicken & Beer, PJ’s latest restaurant that specialises in, well, chicken and beer.

The fried chicken joint has their menu separated into Main Chicks, Sharing Platters, and Snacks. Depending on who you’re tagging for a meal here, you can go for options like the 2-piece CB Golden Crispy (RM19.90) or the group-friendly CB Ultimate Platter (RM39.90).
All orders of fried chicken come with various sides such as coleslaw and french fries, and the option to enjoy the chicken as is, golden crispy, or further seasoned with an in-house red hot sauce.
As for beer, Chicken & Beer partnered with homegrown brewery Paper Kite to bring craft beers to their patrons. Korea’s popular coffee chain Ediya Coffee has landed on our shores, with their first Malaysian outlet tucked away in Shah Alam’s Elmina Lakeside Mall. The soft-launched restaurant currently has four types of pizza, priced RM35 each. Each pie is baked to perfection in a propane-gas Gozney oven, which results in an evenly-cooked crust and crispy base.
The Margherita and Pepperoni Playboy are classics that are hard to go wrong with. For a change from the usuals, the Spring Chicken with chicken pepperoni and sauteed peppers, and Earthyy which has spinach cream and sauteed mushrooms, are worth a try.

6. Boys Don’t Fry

Boys Don’t Fry joins the lineup of eateries hiding out in the old-school Wisma Cosway. Helmed by Manchester-based Tony and his wife, the restaurant brings the no-frills fare of a British caff to KL with their sole menu item – the Fish and Chip (RM38), which comes with a fizzy soda, thick-cut chips, mushy peas, and a side of pickled vegetables and in-house tartar.
Expect a generous portion of fresh perch fish that’s well-seasoned and deep-fried to crispy perfection with a light, airy batter.

Boys Don’t Fry currently operates from Thursdays to Saturdays during lunchtime, but they plan to extend their opening hours soon so that more diners can enjoy their food beyond the current ones.

The streets of Pasar Seni are often clogged with crowds. Luckily for us KL folks, there are spots like Yorimichi to escape to when we need some peace and quiet over coffee and cakes.
The Japanese-inspired cafe is just a stone’s throw from Central Market, but away from the bustle of the streets and market. They’re located on the 1st floor of a shoplot that also houses a florist, next to UR-MU’s Jalan Tun HS Lee branch.

Yet another Penangite-favourite has made their way to Klang Valley – 65 Ondo – and we’re not ones to complain. The Japanese-inspired bakery cum cafe has garnered a solid following for their laminated fresh bakes and almost-too-pretty-to-eat cakes, with multiple outlets in Penang and now one in KL.

With in-house coffee blends, OFFNIC is Puchong’s latest coffee enclave that takes pride in their brews. But don’t expect to be served standard caffeinated drinks here. They have unique options to keep your next coffee run interesting.
Take for starters, the Plum Americano, which pairs candied plums with sparkling water and espresso. Other unique twists include Soybean Curd Latte, Black Sesame Latte, and Ginger Ale Americano, all priced RM15.90 per cup.
