Cheevit Cheeva: Thailand’s Famous Dessert Spot Is Now Open In KL With Salty Egg Yolk Bingsu & Sangkaya Toast

Cheevit Cheeva in Chow Kit, KL

If you find yourself craving shaved ice, you don’t have to book a flight and travel all the way to Thailand to try some of the country’s best. The Land of Smiles’ famous Cheevit Cheeva has just landed in Malaysia with their popular bingsu.

Since the dessert shop opened their first cafe in Chiang Mai in 2015, they’ve been getting attention for their Salty Egg Yolk Bingsu and Shokupan Sang-ka-ya in particular.

We had the chance to drop by their first store in KL at Chow Kit to try these desserts and bring you this review.

Food at Cheevit Cheeva

Cheevit Cheeva is a dessert haven for those with a sweet tooth. They’ve got everything, from refreshing mounds of bingsu with a galore of toppings to dessert shokupan slathered with sweet toppings.

Here are some highlights from their menu:

Salty Egg Yolk Bua-Loi Bingsu

You’ll find many patrons at Cheevit Cheeva placing a order for their Salty Egg Yolk Bua-Loi Bingsu (RM27), a signature here. The smooth shaved ice came with coconut milk and salted egg yolk as condiments to pour over the dessert.

The coconut milk blended well with the shaved ice, but the salty egg yolk had a strong flavour that overpowered the other ingredients on the plate rather than complimented it. In the mix was Bua-Loi, a traditional Thai glutinous ball dessert. It didn’t have a strong taste, but we loved the chewy texture that it added to each bite.

Feel No Grey

We also ordered the Feel No Grey (RM26).

It’s a rich Earl Grey Milk Tea-based bingsu that tasted similar to a boba drink you would order at a bubble tea shop. There was even a platter of brown sugar pearls served on the side, as well as grass jelly that had a strong herbal flavour.

Toast Shokupan Sang-Ka-Ya

The Toast Shokupan Sang-Ka-Ya (RM30) was served to us warm and fresh.

Even from afar, we were amazed by the overall look of the dessert toast – a fluffy-looking and thick shokupan was barely visible from the sheer amount of toppings that came with it. It had a thick slather of creamy kaya, two scoops of coconut ice cream, and a smattering of shredded coconut flesh, which was thick and had a subtle crunchy texture.

The dessert was also served with extra coconut and pandan sauces for those who crave that extra sweetness. When all the components of the dessert are combined together, it melted gracefully in our mouths.

Yuzu Unicorn

In Malaysia’s typically hot weather, a drink like Yuzu Unicorn (RM16) is always welcomed. The elements of this drink matched its name – it’s bright, colourful, and magical. When you take your first sip, you will get a surprise attack of fizziness. Although it was sour, the popping pearls in it gave the drink a hint of sweetness.

Ambience at Cheevit Cheeva

Make sure you dress up extra fancy as there are plenty of spots at Cheevit Cheeva for you to snap photos to share on your Instagram.

Almost every corner of the 2-storey Thai dessert shop in KL is aesthetically pleasing, with its combination of pastel greens and woods. Their dining area also gets a ton of natural light, thanks to the wide windows.

When you head up the stairs and land on the cafe’s second floor, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a pastel paradise – soft, yellow lighting gives the whole place a dreamy vibe.

The verdict

If you dig desserts – bingsu especially – Cheevit Cheeva is a must visit if you’re in the Chow Kit area. It has a great vibe. You might just feel like you’re chilling at a beach in Thailand while spooning up  shaved ice that tastes just like how it looks – delectable.

The cafe has seating options available on both floors, but the 1st floor has fewer tables and tends to get crowded. Those coming with their whole gang should head straight to the 2nd floor, as there are wider tables to accommodate larger groups and booth-style seating for those who want a quieter space.
