Cinemas to reopen nationwide on 9th September
Moviegoers have had to put a pause on their trips to cinemas in the past few months, due to the nationwide lockdown. But as of 9th September 2021, cinemas in all states will be allowed to reopen and serve the fully vaccinated at 50% capacity. This applies to states still in Phase 1 of the National Recovery Plan (NRP), and those that have transitioned to Phase 2 and beyond.
Following the announcement, several cinemas released their line-up of movies available to catch on the big screen again. It includes Marvel flicks such as Black Widow and Shang–Chi, and a documentary film from K-pop group, Blackpink.
Entertainment industry allowed to reopen from 9th September
As of 7th September 2021, 49.9% of the total population in Malaysia, or 6.026,572 individuals, are fully vaccinated.
Along with easing restrictions for travel and businesses for the fully vaccinated under Phase 1 of NRP announced a few weeks ago, the entertainment industry will also be allowed to reopen beginning Thursday, 9th September, as shared in a press statement by the National Security Council (MKN) on behalf of Prime Minister Ismail Sabri.

However, these reopening sectors can only serve the fully vaccinated – those who are 14 days from their 2nd Covid-19 vaccination appointment for two vaccine doses, or 24 days from their single-dose vaccination appointment.
The following sectors will be allowed to operate again, with limits on audience capacity:
- Live broadcast and recording – 30% capacity
- Outdoor and indoor filming – 30% capacity
- Museums and art galleries – 30% capacity, and subject to appointment
- Live performances, including theatre, musicals and comedies – 30% capacity
- Cinemas – 50% capacity
The reopening will benefit over 19,000 companies that have been affected by the pandemic, with relaxation for SOPs allowed as several states have now achieved herd immunity with 80% of the adult population vaccinated.

Cinemas to reopen nationwide on 9th September
Moviegoers who have been missing out on catching films at cinemas will now be allowed to do so again, with cinemas in all states set to reopen tomorrow, 9th September, and serve the fully vaccinated.
