8,868 new Covid-19 cases in Malaysia


On 8th July 2021, Malaysia recorded a total of 8,868 new Covid-19 cases. Today’s total cases sees a worrisome jump in daily cases even with the implementation of the strict EMCO in several areas nationwide, and is the 2nd highest daily count reported in the country since the start of the pandemic. 


Over 5,000 cases in Klang Valley


Of the total daily cases recorded today, Selangor reported the highest number of daily cases in a state nationwide, with a staggering total of 4,152 new cases. Following it are KL (1,133), Negeri Sembilan (897), Perak (543), and Kedah (360).

Perlis (1), Putrajaya (47) , Labuan (64) and Terengganu (68) are the only areas in Malaysia with new daily cases falling below the 100s.

All in all, Klang Valley reported 5,332 cases – about 60% of today’s daily cases.

In Selangor, there are currently 272,993 active cases, with high numbers also recorded in KL (85,042) and Johor (72,722).

Today’s daily cases is also the 2nd highest daily count in the country since 29th May 2021, with 9,020 new cases recorded. It is also the 4th time that Malaysia has recorded cases surpassing the 8,000 mark, with previous counts also recorded on 28th May and 3rd June 2021.

The addition of 8,868 new cases today puts the country’s total confirmed COVID-19 cases at 808,658.

Update: Today also sees 5,802 recovered cases, for a total of 725,480 total recovered cases in the country, as reported by KKM.

135 new deaths puts the total number of people who died of complications from Covid-19 at 5,903. This number is also the highest death count in a day since the start of the pandemic in the country.

There are currently 952 cases in the ICU, and 77,275 active cases.


Daily vaccination rates reach over 300,000


Even though the daily number of cases are alarming, there are other positive developments. Covid-19 vaccination rates in Malaysia has surpassed the 300,000 mark in recent days – a goal that was initially set to be achieved by August.

Yesterday, on 7th July, 375,842 individuals got vaccinated, with 207,795 jabbed with their 1st vaccine dose and 168,047 now fully vaccinated with their 2nd dose received.

This pushes the total vaccination numbers to 10,036,361, as of 7th July at 11.59PM. Of this total, 6,999,554 (21.4%) individuals in Malaysia have received their 1st dose of the vaccine, while 3,036,807 (9.3%) have received their 2nd dose and are now fully vaccinated.

In three days, Malaysia is said to have administered 1,029,646 doses – a small win for the country, as it previously took 48 days to reach the 1 million vaccination mark, as reported by Malay Mail.

Many of us have been looking forward to seeing cases drop due to the current EMCO that has been implemented in several areas in Klang Valley, as well as other states. But today’s worrisome rise in COVID-19 cases shows that the fight against the Covid-19 virus is not over yet, and that we should all remain vigilant by strictly adhering to SOPs.
