Malaysia has been doing a bangin’ job of tackling the COVID-19 outbreak. Since a little over a week ago, the country has been reporting fewer new COVID-19 cases, with recent statistics showing that we’re on a steady downward trend since the last 3-digit figure increase on 17th April 2020.

With the dwindling numbers, Malaysians have been expecting more districts to move out of the red zone. What has come as a pleasant surprise to many, is that while the number of red zones have reduced, as expected, there’s also a staggering increase in green zones.

No active COVID-19 cases in 68 districts

In the recent update by the Ministry of Health, there are now 68 green zones as of 12PM, 26th April 2020. In order for districts to be reclassified as a green zone, they have to maintain a 2-week record of zero new COVID-19 cases. With 68 green zones, nearly half of our Malaysian districts are COVID-19-free.

Back on 18th April, only 47 out of 148 districts were identified to be green zones. This is an increase of 21 green zones in just over a week.

There are also more yellow zones that are on their way to getting reclassified, so we can expect to see a continued increase in the number of green zones. There are currently 67 yellow zones, and a number of them are just waiting to meet the 14-day requirement of zero new COVID-19 cases.

Red zones with over 40 active cases have also reduced with the current figure standing at 13. This is an impressive feat, considering how some previously badly affected districts – such as Gombak and Cheras – have managed to bounce back. As COVID-19 recovery rates continue to surge, it’s highly likely we will see a continuous drop in the number of active cases. This, in turn, will lead to fewer red zones.

Malaysia seeing results from Movement Control Order

While not all of us are thrilled to know that the Movement Control Order (MCO) is extended until 12th May, these results just prove that the regimen is working. The country has been successful in flattening the curve, and all Malaysians needed to do was stay at home.

We can only hope that we can continue to see favourable results while we keep the fight going in our homes.
