DurianBB World in Pasar Seni
Even we locals love hitting up Pasar Seni for its endless street food and attraction options for weekend lepak-ing with friends. Unknown to most, there’s a dessert shop tucked away between the buildings here that you shouldn’t miss out on – DurianBB World. And you guessed it – it’s all about durians.
Durian lovers, we know that with the durian season going on, your eyes may be glued to the countless durians sold by the roadside. But whether a whole durian is too much for you or if you haven’t had your share of durians yet, this is the spot to visit to fix your cravings for the king of fruits.
Ambience at DurianBB
The name of the dessert shop is enough to explain that everything at DurianBB World would be durian – literally a true durian world. It has everything from durian-based desserts and the freshest Musang King straight out of the shell, to adorable durian souvenirs and claw machines.
If all that walking in Pasar Seni has tired you out, and the scorching heat is getting to you, you’ll be glad to know that DurianBB World has an air-conditioned, cosy seating area.
Plus, it has tables big enough for large groups, for those stopping by with a big group of friends.
Desserts at DurianBB World
Durian SoftPop
We gave DurianBB World’s best-selling dessert a try, the Durian SoftPop. Musang King is usually expensive, but if your wallet is thinning down, this soft serve would be enough to give you a perfect taste of the real deal.
At just RM14.80, it’s a refreshing treat to enjoy with friends after a hot day out in Pasar Seni.
The ice cream was smooth and captured the exact flavour of Musang King – just in a creamier, ice cream texture. Topped with crunchy, durian-flavoured popcorn, the combo of textures and flavours will satisfy any dessert or durian lover.
The dessert is also the perfect way to crush your curiosity about the taste of Musang King even if you tend to shy away from durians.
Affogato Mont Mao
Another signature dish we tried was the Affogato Mont Mao. Just its name had us intrigued – who knew that durian and coffee could be a thing?
Priced at RM23.80, the Affogato Mont Mao came with Musang King soft serve, Italian espresso, and premium durian puree. Get your cameras ready, because the highlight is when the durian puree is dramatically shot into the soft serve from a gun by the waiter. The espresso is then poured into the soft serve, and you would have to mix it well together.
The first bite had us in surprise, as the texture and taste was something we’ve never had before. It’s like going on a rollercoaster ride – it starts with a hint of the durian’s sweetness, descends into the bitterness of coffee, and ends with the fusion leaving a rather odd aftertaste in our mouths.
Fizzy Man Man
After all that durian mania you’ve just experienced, it’s time to freshen up your tastebuds with some refreshing drinks. The shop also offer a variety of other fruit juices such as dragon fruit, mango ,and pineapple.
We couldn’t take any more durian, hence we tried the Fizzy Man Man (RM9.8) which was a great refresher – carbonated, and filled with fresh mango bits.
Durian-themed souvenirs and gallery
Once you’re done having a durian feast, pick out souvenirs for your family or friends at DurianBB World’s gift shop on the 2nd floor. It stocks all sorts of King of Fruit goodies and snacks, ranging from adorable animated durian merchandise to durian-flavoured popcorn.
There’s a comic gallery and large displays of DurianBB characters on the upper level of the store too – we would say that this is where the fun really begins.
There are fun machine games to play with as well. You will receive four free tokens for shots at the claw machine when you purchased any of the beverages or desserts, which lets you stand a chance to win prizes like plushies.
The verdict
For real durian lovers, soft serves and milkshakes may not completely fix your durian cravings. But DurianBB World should be your next go-to spot if you’re craving for some good durian-flavoured desserts that doesn’t dull down the King of Fruit’s iconic flavour.
That being said, we would give the Affogato Mont Mao a miss on our next visit, as the odd combination of durian and coffee lingered in our mouths long after our meal ended.
