EKVE Opens With Free Tolls For 30 Days Until 29th Sept, Expect Eased Traffic Between Ampang & Kajang

EKVE opens with free tolls for 30 days

We’ve come a long way since 2015. The East Klang Valley Expressway (EKVE), which began construction in September 2015, has officially commenced operations, with commuters able to travel toll-free along a part of the expressway for the next 30 days.

The toll-free period begins at 6am on 30th August 2025, and extends until 11.59pm on 29th September 2025, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the official launch of the highway on 29th August.

What is the EKVE?

EKVE, also known as the Kuala Lumpur Outer Ring Road (KLORR), is a major expressway project aimed at improving connectivity and alleviating traffic congestion around the Klang Valley’s outskirts. It’s essentially an “orbital system” of ring roads around Greater Kuala Lumpur, built to reduce travel time and ease congestion along existing routes, particularly for motorists who travel between Ampang and Kajang.

The new expressway spans approximately 39.5 kilometers once fully completed, linking Ukay Perdana in Ampang, Selangor, to Bandar Sungai Long in Kajang. It features four interchanges – Sungai Long, Bandar Mahkota Cheras, Hulu Langat, and Ampang – complemented by four toll plazas and two lay-bys.

According to EKVE’s website, the expressway will help disperse traffic and stand as an alternative route for travels between areas like Kajang and Semenyih to Hulu Langat and Ampang, with direct connectivity to other existing highways such as SILK, LEKAS, AKLEH, DUKE, and MRR2.

It’ll also act as a bypass for north-south-bound traffic, with motorists able to skip entering the KL city centre. It is expected to benefit approximately 140,000 motorists daily, and is said to help decrease travel time by approximately 20 minutes.

The first section covers 16.8km of the main alignment and 8.4km of access ramps. It features a dual-carriageway design with two lanes flowing in each direction.

During the toll-free period, motorists can familiarise themselves with the new interchanges and toll systems without having to fork out any money, while EKVE transitions toward full operation. Following the toll-free duration, standard toll charges will apply.

Free tolls on Section 1 of EKVE till 29th September

With traffic always on the minds of Malaysian motorists, the launch of a new expressway comes as relief for those whose travels typically involve the roads between Ampang and Kajang. The toll-free launch also lets us test out the EKVE at ease, from now till 29th September.
