Selangorians Can Take Free Online Language Classes Offered By The Government, Here’s How You Can Sign Up

Free online language classes by the Selangor government

Selangorians, you can now learn how to say “Hi” in languages beyond your native one, without spending a cent. Starting in 2026, the Selangor state government will begin offering free online language classes as part of its initiative to bolster multilingual skills and promote unity among Malaysians.

The Selangor state government announced in 2025 that they’ll be offering free online language classes under a subsidised programme called Language Discovery. Languages to learn as part of the programme, which kicks off in 2026, are Mandarin, Arabic, German, Tamil, French, Russian, English, and Spanish.

After much anticipation, the Selangor Public Library – or Perbadanan Perpustakaan Awam Selangor (PPAS) – shared on 8th February 2026 in an Instagram post that the online classes will begin on 20th February. The classes are part of a 3-month course, which includes four sessions per month.

For the uninitiated, the online language class programme started during the Covid-19 pandemic with the Selangor Public Library Corporation and language centres.

If you’re not a Selangor resident, you can still register for classes, but you’ll have to fork out RM120 for the same 3-month-long course. The course similarly comprises four classes per month, amounting to RM10/class.

How to sign up for the free language classes?

Selangorians can sign up for the free online classes on Selangor Public Library’s website, from 9th February onwards. Do note that there are limited slots available for the classes, and the high demand for them has led the website to crash and not work for some visitors.

Registrants will need to sign up for a Selangor public library membership, which is free and requires basic personal details such as name, address, and identity card number to complete. During the registration for classes process, you’ll also be required to prove that you’re a Selangor resident.

Selangor rolls out free online language classes to boost multilingualism

With how globalised the world is becoming each day, learning a new language would certainly help increase work opportunities. Here’s hoping this initiative can be extended nationwide to foster an interest in learning new languages in our already multilingual society.
