Mention fried rice, and Uncle Soon Fried Rice will likely crop up in the conversation. The popular food haunt offers affordable, consistent, and no-frills plates of fried rice. They also operate multiple stores in Klang Valley, including prominent areas like KL’s Bukit Bintang and Subang Jaya’s SS15.

Their classic Egg Fried Rice & Egg (RM7) may seem simple, but don’t let its appearance deceive you. It has a strong umami and wok hei finish. The side of sambal belacan is perfectly sour from tamarind and slightly spicy too, adding even more flavour to each bite.

2. Restoran Yut Kee

Restoran Yut Kee is an old-school kopitiam that has been serving patrons Hainanese cuisine since 1928.  While the pork chops and marble cakes are popular orders here, don’t overlook the Belacan Fried Rice (RM8.60).

Mildly tongue-tingling and sour from the addition of belacan to the wok, the aromatic fried rice here has corns, carrots, spring onion, and bean sprouts for an extra crunch in each bite.

The restaurant also plates up a Salted Fish Fried Rice (RM9.60) variation, or a pared-down, but still flame-kissed, Fried Rice (RM8.10).

3. Kam Heong Coffee Shop

The ever-popular Kam Heong Coffee Shop is made up of a flurry of hawker stalls dishing up some of the best – including fried rice from Vui’s Fried Rice that’s cooked by a former Din Tai Fung chef.

Each grain of rice in the fried rice (RM10) is lightly yellow and satisfyingly greasy, with corn and spring onion peaking through the mound of rice. The dish also comes with four prawns and a serving of sambal cili padi that adds a nice layer of spiciness – much needed if you prefer your fried rice with a kick.

4. Ray Power Corner

Just a stone’s throw from Petaling Street, KL’s famed Chinatown, you’ll find Ray Power Corner. The humble roadside stall dishes up an extensive menu of over 30 goreng dishes, with blue tables arranged neatly by the sidewalk packed with patrons seeking out dinner and late-night meals.

Alongside their popular nasi lemak and butter chicken, the Malay-style fried rice are common orders at tables.

There are nine variations of the dish that’s served here, including Nasi Goreng Cina (RM10) and Nasi Goreng Tomyam (RM15). A go-to order is the popular Nasi Goreng Kampung with chicken (RM10) or seafood (RM15), which has the addition of anchovies and chilli for that extra touch of umami and spice.

Aunty Nat specialises in Nyonya cuisine, which is commonly associated with kuih-muih and curries. But an equally popular order at the restaurant that comes highly recommended by patrons is their Sambal Belacan Fried Rice with Beef (RM15).

Although it leans towards the pricier side, the dish packs long beans, egg chunks, and beef slices on a plate.

6. FUIYOH! It’s Uncle Roger

A restaurant that has been on everyone’s lips before and after opening day is FUIYOH! It’s Uncle Roger. The restaurant by Nigel Ng, also better known by his moniker Uncle Roger, has a fried rice-focused menu that’s approved by the comedian himself.

The menu is also entirely pork-free, so you won’t have to leave anyone out while dining here.

Four staple fried rice dishes are served, including the signature non-spicy Uncle Roger’s Egg Fried Rice (RM16) that has a good wok hei to it. The upscale N97 takes the humble fried rice to the next level with their Wagyu Fried Rice. While the dish only comes served as a side with their luxurious Signature Wagyu Tomahawk, priced from RM928 (1.6 kg), it has diners promising to return for it.

Picture this: fragrant, garlicky fried rice cooked with fat from the wagyu meat, and chunks of wagyu meat in each scoop of glossy, fat-coated rice.

So it comes as no surprise that their signature fried rice dish also comes with lean duck meat – the Duck Meat & Salted Egg Yolk (RM25), which delivers on its name: chunks of duck meat to complement glossy, salted egg yolk-rich fluffy rice.
