Immersify KL at BBCC
Experiential art shows have become a hit in Malaysia in post-pandemic times. While many have popped up and left their venues, there’s a new digital art space in Kuala Lumpur that ensures we’ll always have a spot to feast our eyes on immersive art: immersify KL.
The new large-scale exhibition space comprises 11 immersive zones – think Malaysia’s own teamLabs exhibition that you can visit on any given day of the week, year round. With tickets priced from RM68 for adults, we visited the digital art gallery so you’ll know what to expect.
What to expect at Immersify KL
The Labs is an entertainment hub at Bukit Bintang City Centre (BBCC) that was formerly called the Malaysia Grand Bazaar. It sits next to LaLaport BBCC, housing concert venue Zepp Kuala Lumpur, a retro-inspired GSC, and now immersify KL.
The new digital art space here is spearheaded by the South Korean Bitgrim Immersify Group, which brings mind-bending, multisensory installations popular there and in Japan to KL. The result: 11 themed immersive zones in a 30,000sqft space, including Malaysia’s first 360-degree projection room with 12m-tall ceilings – about 2 storeys.
We felt teeny-tiny standing next to the digital displays – just what we expect when stepping into an immersive space.
Flashless photography is allowed in all the zones, so you can look forward to having a photo gallery full of next-level shots and videos to post on your socials at the end of your visit.
Shutterbugs can expect to spend around 2 hours at immersify KL. If you’re here just to soak up the visual smorgasbord, we recommend picking an off-peak hour to drop by to enjoy the visual displays while minimising other visitors’ silhouettes in your shots.
The galleries at Immersify KL
With the variety of zones and themes at immersify KL, we’re here to help break down each one for you so you know what to expect – this includes preparing your best poses for photos there.
Glowing Garden
Your journey through the digital art space begins at Glowing Garden. Projections of flowers will be the backdrop for photos here – from a million or so floating perennials to giant blooming roses. Mirrors in the room add to the “infiniteness” of the flower fields.
Mystic Falls
Mystic Falls feels like the best possible mashup to get when you blend the scenes from Ice Age and Avatar. The sounds of waterfalls match the scenes on the huge screen. Not all just falls, realistic, gargantuan elephants emerge from the cascades every once in a while to give gallery-goers a good “wow” moment.
Moonlight Memories
There’s a good mix of large and smaller gallery spaces at immersify KL. Moonlight Memories stands on the cosier side, but it’ll be fascinating to just marvel at the fast-changing projections of celestial and terrestrial forms – from Oppenheimer-esque closeups of planets to angel wings that prove to be a popular photo op for visitors.
Starlight Garden
The Starlight Garden is one of the only galleries at immersify KL that has an installation. A hundred or so lanterns hang in a fully-mirrored room, gleaming in various shades of blues, yellows, and reds so no two pictures that you take in here will look the same.
Turning Moment, Illusion Road & Prism Shine
Things get a little trippy in these three zones. Turning Moment lets you step into a 3D space that looks like a scene out of Tron, while Illusion Road offers up a kaleidoscope experience for gallery-goers.
Likewise, Prism Shine lets you bask in intricate projections in a prism-like space akin to the inside of a Moroccan lantern. The intricate shadow patterns on the wall, created by the slowly spinning installation overhead, can get a tad dizzying.
Neon Jungle
Neon Jungle has projections of regional wildlife like proboscis monkeys and tigers in a forest exploding in a spectrum of electric fluorescent colour. At one point, an orangutan pounds its fist against the screen, appearing to attempt an escape – cracks even appear on the screen in a thrillingly realistic display.
This zone is definitely 5/5 in terms of thrills for us.
Canvas Oceania
Families with kiddos will enjoy Canvas Oceania best. It’s an interactive zone that lets you colour sea creatures like orcas and clown fishes and see them come to life – grab a colouring sheet from a shelf below the workshop tables, colour it in with crayons, and then scan your masterpiece to watch the creature swim across the huge display screen.
Surreal World
A highlight for us was the Surreal World, a reality-defying 360-degree zone with screens that span the floor and up the 2-storey-high walls. The drum-like space envelops visitors with the panoramic moving displays, with animated pictures ranging from the surreal to the otherworldly.
Art Gallery
For art appreciators, the Art Gallery is the zone that you’ll want to beeline to – the masterpieces of Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, and Gustav Klimt come alive in a brilliant display that stretches across the floor and the walls.
Here in one of the larger zones in the gallery, gallery-goers can enjoy animated versions of famous Impressionist paintings – watch the eyes of Klimt’s famous Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer blink, and the dress of the woman in Monet’s A Woman With A Parasol move with the wind.
