Lizard and cockroach cakes from The Slice Ipoh Homebaker
Cakes play a big part in birthday celebrations. Even for those without a sweet tooth, it’s hard to go against the tradition of blowing out candles to mark our special occasion. Luckily for us, there are plenty of bakeries and home bakers around that serve up creative cakes for us to do so.
But one baker in Malaysia, The Slice Ipoh Homebaker, deserves a special mention because it makes custom cakes that include realistic animal and insect-themed ones. This creative homebaker based in Ipoh doesn’t only do your regular cakes decorated with puppies or kittens made from fondant. Instead, they make “lizard” and “cockroach” cakes that come with edible versions of the critters to give your loved ones an unforgettable birthday surprise.
Ipoh homebaker has fondant lizard and cockroach cakes
The lizard cake was shared to The Slice Ipoh Homebaker’s Facebook account on 12th December 2020, along with a cheeky caption that reads, “Creepy little lizards for your birthday” with a heart-eyes emoji to cap it off.

Photos that followed the post showed just how unique the cake looked, with a realistic lizard made of fondant acting as a cake topper. 2 more of these creepy crawlies decorate the murky, black-and-white cream-covered cake.

But this isn’t their first foray into making cake toppers of less-than-adorable animals – which Malaysians know well of and associate as house pests. The Slice Ipoh Homebaker also shared on their Facebook page on 28th November a cockroach cake, which they are also able to customise and bake for those who want to order an out-of-the-ordinary cake for their loved ones, or frenemies.

Similar to the lizard cake, the “cockroaches” on the cake are made out of fondant and are entirely edible – from their “antenna” to “legs”. The only exception is that you’ll be getting more critters in this cake, as there’s a total of 5 cockroaches “crawling” on and around, and even emerging from it like a pest-infected horror movie scene.
