Malaysia Day events happening in 2026
Malaysia Day falls on Wednesday, 16th September 2026, giving Malaysians a midweek break to celebrate the country’s cultures and communities. Those staying in the Klang Valley can spend the public holiday catching traditional performances, exploring local bazaars or joining thousands of Malaysians dressed in their finest traditional attire.
Several celebrations have already begun and will continue through Malaysia Day, while others are taking place exclusively on 16th September. Here’s a list of things to do during Malaysia Day 2026:
1. Festival Budaya Malaysia

Festival Budaya Malaysia is bringing the country’s diverse arts, food and heritage to Taman Tasik Titiwangsa for a full-day celebration on Malaysia Day. Visitors can catch cultural performances, sample heritage dishes and browse stalls selling handicrafts and locally made products throughout the park.
The programme includes live painting sessions and portrait demonstrations. One of the festival’s highlights is Dua Layar – Selebriti ke Kanvas, a programme by the National Art Gallery that lets Malaysian celebrities – including Dato’ Imuda, Zul Handy Black, Joey Daud, Yaya Maembong and Wan Raja – flaunt their artistic sides by creating their own art pieces from scratch.
Visitors can also meet the participating personalities, and browse an exhibition where their completed artworks will be displayed and sold.
Beyond the celebrity appearances, there will be community ArtBox activities, doodle art, recycled art, cosplay art and busking performances. Festival-goers can also try traditional games, shop for local crafts and explore the other cultural showcases happening around the grounds. Admission is free.

2. Maybank Foundation Cultural Art Showcase and Bazaar

The Maybank Foundation Cultural Art Showcase and Bazaar 2026 is bringing Malaysian arts, heritage and craftsmanship together at KLGCC Mall, in conjunction with Patriotic Month celebrations. Now in its third edition, the event provides local artisans and cultural practitioners with a space to share their work and the stories behind it.
Visitors can browse booths featuring traditional and contemporary Malaysian crafts, including weaving, beading, batik, wau-making and Indigenous art. Rather than simply shopping for finished pieces, visitors can meet the makers and learn more about the skills, cultural influences and time required to produce each item. The bazaar also spotlights flavours from different parts of Malaysia through its selection of local food and drinks.
On Malaysia Day, festival-goers can also catch a lineup of traditional performances, including wayang kulit performances and traditional Malaysian musical performances, happening between 12pm and 2pm. Admission to the showcase and its Malaysia Day performances is free.

3. Keretapi Sarong 2026

Keretapi Sarong is returning for its 10th anniversary, inviting Malaysians to turn train stations and public spaces into a colourful celebration of the country’s cultures. Participants are encouraged to wear sarongs, batik, songket or other traditional attire before travelling together by public transport.
Organised by community group LOCCO, the annual flash mob aims to encourage the use of public transport while recognising the sarong as a traditional garment and cultural symbol.
This year’s celebration will be its largest yet, taking place simultaneously across the Klang Valley and 10 locations nationwide. These comprise Padang Besar, Langkawi, Sungai Petani, George Town, Ipoh, Melaka, Johor Bahru, Kota Bharu, Kuantan and Kuching.
In the Klang Valley, participants will gather at 12 selected train stations before travelling together to a secret destination. The final location will only be revealed during the journey, preserving the surprise that has become part of the annual event.

4. Rentak MalaysiaKu 2026: Slice of Life

GMBB’s annual Malaysia Day celebration returns with Rentak MalaysiaKu 2026: Slice of Life, with a slew of programmes that explores the everyday rituals, crafts, flavours and stories that shape Malaysian identity.
There’s the Mini Show Gallery with detailed miniature displays recreate recognisable scenes and experiences from across Malaysia. Visitors can also participate in the Slice of Life Limited Edition Sticker Rally by exploring GMBB, and collecting specially designed stickers from its tenant stores until 16th September.
The Malaysian market takes centre stage at Rasa Pasar, a multi-sensory exhibition that uses sight, touch and smell to recreate the experience of walking through its stalls. There are also art exhibitions to learn more about the culture and communities in Malaysia, as well as hands-on workshops such as songket crafting and kuih-muih clay-making.

5. Pesta Muda Mudi

Pesta Muda Mudi is returning to Central Market for a five-day Malaysia Day celebration themed “Satu Bendera, Satu Suara”. The celebration will feature a line-up of local artistic performances throughout its run. While the complete schedule has yet to be announced, visitors can expect different forms of Malaysian performing arts, alongside appearances by Pesta Muda Mudi’s familiar characters: Pak Maun, Munah and the gang.
Visitors can also hunt for a special Pesta Muda Mudi stamp created for the celebration. It makes a small souvenir to remember the occasion while exploring Central Market’s collection of local art, handicrafts, clothing and Malaysian food.
The event begins on Malaysia Day and continues until Sunday, making it an option for those unable to visit on the public holiday. Admission details and the full performance schedule will be announced on Pesta Muda Mudi’s social media channels.

6. Mansur & Liu

Mansur & Liu is a musical theatre show that brings the story of Sultan Mansur Shah and Princess Liu to the stage through music, dance and theatre. Inspired by the Sulalatus Salatin, also known as the Malay Annals, the musical draws on their relationship and the historical ties between Melaka and China.
Directed by Dato’ M. Nasir, the production stars Aliff Aziz as Sultan Mansur Shah ,and Melinda Dadew as Princess Liu. The show runs for approximately three hours, including a 15-minute interval. Traditional attire is listed as the dress code, so those heading over after Keretapi Sarong can keep their outfits on. Tickets start from RM88 and can be purchased through Ticket2U’s official website.

7. Malaysia Day Sip & Paint at Rubic’s Club

Rubic’s Club is hosting a Malaysia Day edition of its Sip & Paint session at Lunavera, KL. Participants can dress in their favourite traditional attire, and paint their own bunga raya, Malaysia’s national flower, on canvas.
The two-hour session will take place indoors, offering a cool, cosy setting away from the heat and haze, while still surrounded by nature. Guests can come solo or bring friends, and all painting materials will be provided.

8. GreenRoom SideQuest

GreenRoom is taking over the old General Post Office at Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad for a two-day Malaysia Day event centred on heritage, archives and local creativity. Visitors can explore the market at Kongsi Kreatif on Level 2, with the historic building providing a setting, unlike the usual weekend pop-up venue.
More than 20 local makers, food vendors and brands are listed in GreenRoom’s booth directory, giving visitors a mix of creative goods and food to discover.
The programme also includes a zine-making workshop, a sharing session that dives deep into Malaysian horror stories, as well as a Seni Tampal Selit workshop. Entry is free, and visitors are welcome to arrive in traditional attire.

Where to celebrate Malaysia Day 2026 in KL
Malaysia Day plans do not have to stop at one event. Visitors can join Keretapi Sarong in the morning, explore a creative market in traditional attire or head indoors for a performance or painting session. With celebrations happening across KL on 16th September 2026, the harder part might be deciding which one to visit first.
