M’sian Boss Berates Employee Who’s On Wedding Leave On WhatsApp, Tells Him To Reply To His Messages Instantly

Malaysian boss berates employee on wedding leave

Respecting an employee’s time off from work seems like a no-brainer. But it appears to be a challenge for some bosses who still can’t identify the fine line between work and personal life – such as when this employer questioned their employee for visiting a clinic while on medical leave, but not showing up for work.

This Malaysian boss is another perfect example of that. A viral series of WhatsApp message documented a boss berating one of his employees who’s on wedding leave, and demanding instant responses from them. The messages also contained abusive language, and little respect for the employee who was making wedding preparations.

CEO messages staff who’s on wedding leave expecting an instant reply

On 16th November 2021, the Facebook page MCN Asia Entertainment shared several screenshots of a WhatsApp conversation between a CEO and his worker which has caught the attention of many online.

The viral post, garnering over 3,700 shares and 1,400 comments at the time of writing, showed a boss criticising and scolding his employee for not hitting a weekly sales target.

The CEO, who goes by the name Ryan, messaged the staff who’s on wedding leave rudely with abusive language, asking them to reply to his messages instantly.

“Hello!! Reply NOW. Where da [the] hell are you now? You thought on leave no need to care [about] your job is it?” were among the things Ryan said to his employee, despite knowing the fact that they were away for wedding preparations.

In response, the unnamed employee simply apologised to the CEO for not delivering the weekly target, saying, “I will push harder to improve the number” and even promising to “follow up on old lead first” and “[figuring] out some other way to increase it [weekly sales target]”.

However, this only seemed to ruffle the CEO’s feathers even more, who was seemingly displeased with his employee’s answer.

He proceeded to question the employee, asking if they “Got use their your brain to think or not?” and insisting once again that they reply instantly to his messages. He also made the employee in question feel bad for being on leave, texting, “If everyone not responding and no care when on leave how company can do well? (sic)”.

The series of text ended with Ryan messaging, “Please be responsible to your job! Else we pay you for what. I know you’re busy on your wedding right now. But please respect your job!

Netizens criticize the boss for treating his staff poorly

The viral post invited a lot of backlash from people because of the CEO’s bad behaviour towards his employee who’s busy preparing for his wedding. Netizens criticised the boss for treating his staff poorly with abusive language, while sharing their own experiences dealing with similar bosses.

Another netizen wrote, “When my workers are on leave, I don’t even have the courage to contact them”, suggesting that she wouldn’t disturb her employees when they are on leave.

Malaysian boss berates employee on wedding leave

It’s understandable if bosses have to admonish their workers for not performing well, so long as it is done in a professional manner that takes into consideration respect for their employees. But berating an employee who’s on leave is certainly questionable – a job is a job, but it doesn’t mean that employees have to dedicate all their time to work even on their off days.
