National Service Training Programme (PLKN) 3.0
Many Malaysian millennials can recall the hoo-ha of the National Service Training Programme, or Program Latihan Khidmat Negara (PLKN), in 2003. Buying newspapers on enlistment day to check for the dreaded selection notice and trudging through the 3-month programme are just some of the memories we have of it.
This year, the baton has officially been passed on to those born in the late 00s with the launch of PLKN 3.0.
With multiple updates to Malaysia’s previously existing National Service (NS) programme, we’ve rounded up everything that you need to know about it, including how to check for your selection and updates on the service duration.

What is PLKN 3.0?

Let’s be honest – PLKN 3.0 and its series sounds like the drop of a new Apple device. This is because PLKN underwent a previous reboot in 2016 under the name PLKN 2.0, which took in participants voluntarily. This would come as a change from the initial introduction of PLKN in 2003 to the Malaysian youth, which randomly and automatically conscripted 18-year-olds in a 3-month programme until it ceased in 2018.
After a seven-year hiatus, the PLKN made its return in 2025. The 3.0 programme will be conducted in three series throughout the year – but more on this later.
What is the purpose of NS?
The PLKN 3.0 is an initiative by the Ministry of Defence to promote national unity, leadership skills, and civic responsibility among the Malaysian youth. It’s designed to be inclusive, involving participants from all walks of life who possess a MyKad.
How long is the training duration?

The training duration for each series is 45 days, with three series planned for the year 2025:
- Series 1: From 12th January to 25th February, on voluntary basis
- Series 2: From 11th May to 24th June, on a voluntary and drafted basis
- Series 3: From 7th September to 21st October, on a voluntary and drafted basis
Who gets selected for PLKN 3.0?
The PLKN 3.0 is open to voluntary and conscripted participants, with anyone born after 2007 part of the random drafting pool.

A total of 550 trainees will be conscripted for Series 2. In Series 1, there were 116 trainees, comprising 73 males and 43 females aged between 18 and 25 years old, who completed their training on 25th February.
How to check if you’ve been drafted for PLKN 3.0
Now that conscription is in play for PLKN 3.0 Series 2/2025, those born in 2007 and after will want to check for their possible draft notice – yes, time to hit that dreaded semak button.
As of 22nd April 2025, Malaysians can check their selection status on the official National Service Training Department’s website. Here, you can access the necessary information to determine your status for the upcoming training session, by inputting your MyKad number.
If you’re unsure of anything, you can contact the Trainee Unit at 03-40133613 or 03-40133618.

The PLKN 3.0 Series 2/2025 training will commence on 11th May and will run for 45 days, concluding on 24th June. This training for Series 2 and 3 will be conducted at two locations:
- 515th Territorial Army Regiment Camp in Kuala Lumpur
- 505th Territorial Army Regiment Camp in Pekan, Pahang
What does the training process look like?

The training programme is structured to focus on both physical and civic development. It is divided into two main components:
Basic military training
This module constitutes 70% of the training. It covers fundamental military skills, national security policies, the principles of Malaysia Madani well-being, and leadership development. Trainees will be equipped with the necessary skills to understand and participate in national security and leadership roles.
Nation-building components
The remaining 30% of the programme is dedicated to nation-building. This component aims to instill strong character values, patriotism, and national unity among the youth. It includes elements of self-identity and unity-building.
What happens if I don’t show up?
Attendance is compulsory if you’ve been selected to serve in PLKN 3.0. The National Service Training Act 2003 has several provisions for individuals who are selected but opt to flee NS, which is considered an offence that may lead to imprisonment of up to 6 months, a RM3,000 fine, or both.
If you have to postpone your enlistment, only certain reasons are considered by the government, such as for exceptional hardship and further studies. Selected trainees may apply for this and receive a certificate of postponement upon approval.
All you need to know about PLKN 3.0
The return of the PLKN aims to foster national unity and develop the skills of Malaysia’s youth. By checking your selection status and understanding the training details, you can prepare yourself for the road ahead – or if you’re fortunate to sit this one out, just keep updated with the new programme.
Good luck to all potential trainees.
