Man gets trapped in a bank near midnight
We never know when we might get trapped in tricky situations. But one thing’s for sure – urban Malaysians are street-smart enough to figure their way out of any modern predicament, even in a state of panic.
That was exactly what happened to Syahrul Asyraf, who was locked in a bank while withdrawing money from an automated teller machine (ATM) near midnight. Despite being trapped inside for nearly an hour, he managed to stay calm until he was able to get out of the building, avoiding an unplanned overnight stay at the bank.
Here’s how the story unfolded.
Locked in for nearly an hour

On 4th February 2022, Syahrul Asyraf uploaded a series of clips on his TikTok account @asyboi, which showed the incident taking place at a CIMB branch in Taman Tun Dr. Ismail.
As Syahrul was withdrawing some money from the ATM at around 11.40PM, the bank shutters started rolling down, much to his bewilderment. This is presumably because banks have an automatic door lock system, which activates at night for safety reasons.
He had wanted to rush out before the shutters locked him in completely. However, he was not able to do so as the ATM was not done dispensing his money.

With no apparent way of getting out, Syahrul Asyraf panicked at first, and was stuck inside the bank for an hour, as he shared in his TikTok video.
He called the bank’s hotline to see if there was any way he could leave. Fortunately, he received help and was able to find an exit button that’s accessible from the inside.
A sign by the door indicates that the glass door and roller shutter of the bank he visited closes after 12PM, and that patrons must press a release button to exit.
Being a good sport, Syahrul Asyraf tried to make light of the situation. He joked that it was lucky that he didn’t have to wait any longer as he had to use the washroom.
Netizens amused by this mishap and advised him to be more careful
Many have been commenting on the TikTok video since, with over 500,000 views, 30,000 likes and 300 comments garnered on the first video he posted at the time of writing. Netizens found the incident hilarious, and teased that he could have just stayed the night.

While many thought it was funny, there were also others who advised Syahrul Asyraf to avoid using the ATM so late at night, including netizen Ahmad Faisal, who noted that it could be dangerous.
This is likely because there might not be anyone around to help us out of such situations at late hours.

It is wise to avoid using the ATM during ungodly hours
We’re glad that nothing serious happened to Syahrul Asyraf, as circumstances could’ve been different in a worst case scenario. So all jokes aside, it would be wiser to settle our bank matters during the day, when there are more people around who could help, should anything happen.
