While we’re seeing all sorts of innovative dishes on the menu of eateries lately, the trend of matcha-flavoured desserts are here to stay. Proving this fact are these cafes in Klang Valley that have matcha-infused desserts and drinks as the star of their menu.


1. Bask – popular matcha cheesecake


If no cake satisfies you quite like a matcha cheesecake does, then head to BASK. This cosy cafe in Bangsar is well-known for their burnt cheesecakes that are melt-in-your-mouth good.

There are three options of cheesecakes to enjoy here, which are crafted by the masterminds behind the delectable desserts at The Tokyo Restaurant. But for something that’s rich in matcha, opt for the YURI Matcha Cheesecake (RM23.30/slice).

While on the pricier side, patrons often rave about the freshly-baked dessert. It delivers when it comes to texture – creamy, velvety, and smooth.

You’ll also find a range of Japanese tea beverages to order, which utilises Niko Neko matcha blends. They include the AJISAI (RM15.90) with soybean-like notes and KIKU (RM18) with a pistachio nuttiness matcha drinks.

2. BuTian Desserts – matcha sandwich cookies

Going beyond the usual matcha cakes and lattes are BuTian Desserts’ Japanese tea sandwich cookies, priced at RM7.50 per piece.

Not only are these bite-sized treats ‘Gram-ready, they pack the richness of classic Matcha, roasted Houjicha, and umami Genmaicha in each sandwich cookie flavour.

If you have a real hankering for these treats, you can opt for the Sandwich Cookie Box (RM40.50) which packs six of these cookies to have them to-go.

Other desserts worth trying here is the Matchamisu (RM26.50). It’s not as clean-cut as a slice of cake when it comes to appearance, but it’s a satisfying mound of lady finger biscuits dipped in Yuri Matcha Latte, encased in a vanilla-and-matcha mascarpone cream, and drizzled with a thick matcha sauce.

Patrons often praise the cafe’s desserts for being less sweet too – hence the name of the cafe, which can be translated to English as “not sweet”. They also serve no pork or lard at their cafe.

3. 108 Matcha Saro – legit obanyaki & warabimochi


Bringing to Klang Valley folks a speciality straight from Japan is 108 Matcha Saro. After a 2-year hiatus due to the pandemic, they’ve made a comeback in Malaysia with their signatures making a return too: the obanyaki and warabimochi.

The Matcha Obanyaki (RM7.90) is a Japanese matcha-flavoured pancake stuffed with red bean paste, made fresh on the spot, and served piping hot to patrons. Needless to say, this treat is best enjoyed the moment you’ve been served a bag of it.

Likewise, the jelly-soft Warabimochi (RM14.90) is matcha-flavoured and further dusted with soybean and matcha powder.

4. OGA Tea & Dining – matcha Tiramisu cakes served in a box


OGA Tea & Dining is best known for their Japanese bento boxes. But Japanese rice isn’t the only thing that’s served from a box at this zen-like cafe with Muji vibes. Their signature best-seller Tiramisu cakes with a matcha twist are served aesthetically in a wooden box too.

There are the Genmaicha (RM22) and Getsusui (RM25), both strong in matcha and served in an interesting wooden box. Chocolate lovers can opt for the latter – chocolate balls are tucked within the creamy cake.

The cafe also serves two burnt matcha cheesecakes shaped like cubes – have your pick of the Getsusui Matcha (RM22) or Rin Houjicha (RM20).

As for drinks, OGA Tea & Dining uses seasonal sencha from Japanese tea farms to enhance the flavours of their deep-steamed hot teas and cold brews – so any option on the menu pretty much guarantees a satisfying tea taste.

5. ONO – matcha toast & lava cake

ONO is an all-white cafe that’s aesthetically pleasing to the eyes – the touch of warm light helps elevate the place from sterile to cosy. This Muslim-friendly spot serves a variety of matcha beverages and desserts to enjoy in the zen-like space, as well as various hearty brunch foods such as pastas and sandos.

On the dessert menu, you’ll find matcha cakes and beverages. Unique offerings here are the When Two Worlds Collide Lava Cake (RM22) that serves up coffee gelato with two oozy lava cakes, matcha and white chocolate, and the Matcha Toast (RM26). Thick and moist Japanese matcha-infused shokupan is served with coffee gelato and gula Melaka sauce.

As for drinks, the Matcha Latte (RM13) is a classic, but we recommend the FURIN (RM17), which consists of matcha paired with passionfruit, mango, lime, and soda water.


The cafe also serves burnt matcha cheesecake RM18/slice), which has a well-balanced matcha taste.

Due to their store’s size and warm interior, you’ll often find a crowd here, especially on the weekends. So be here early if you want to avoid the queues.

6. Matcha Eight – matcha ice cream with eight variations


For all those with a sweet tooth and a craving for matcha, Matcha Eight is a matcha speciality store that serves everything matcha – ice creams, desserts, and beverages.

To cool down from the heat outside, opt for their matcha ice cream (from RM13) that has eight variations of the green tea. They cover the spectrum of tasting notes, some more sweet, rich, and bitter than the others. If you simply can’t make up your mind on names alone, you can sample the ice cream flavours before choosing one.

Their matcha latte (RM15) is also a crowd favourite. It has a rich, creamy, and strong matcha flavour, that’s not too sweet or too bitter. Other desserts that are worth trying are their Matcha Jelly (RM16) – red bean paste paired with fresh mochi – and their Traditional Warabimochi (RM30) with an ice cream of your choice to top the jelly-soft mochi

7. Mei by Fat Spoon – the classic matcha latte & cake

Mei by Fat Spoon is a homely Japanese restaurant that serves comfort food like poke bowls and pastas. Even with how popular their Ox Tongue Rice is, it’s their matcha desserts that often steal the limelight – in particular, their Matcha Latte (from RM10).

8. Niko Neko Matcha – adjust the matcha level in your drink


It’s hard to mention matcha and not bring up Niko Neko. This brand sources their matcha powder from Mie, Japan, which are halal-certified, while many cafes around the country use Niko Neko matcha to make their drinks and desserts.

At their own cafes, they offer a variety of matcha-infused lattes (from RM13), teas (from RM12), and even mocktails (RM15). They also serve desserts such as matcha cheesecake (RM10/slice) and choux (RM12).

Their best-seller matcha latte is rich in flavour and super creamy, with a clean aftertaste. You get to choose if you want a more creamy or bitter taste, by adjusting the amount of matcha in your latte when you order.
