MBO Cinemas shares farewell post on Facebook
It’s been tough times for cinemas, as many of them had to shut their doors temporarily, incurring losses, due to the various stages of the Movement Control Order (MCO). One of the cinema chains that’s taken a massive hit is MBO Cinemas, which was reportedly going to close down permanently back in 2020 after they announced the indefinite closures of 17 of 27 locations nationwide. Then earlier this year, it was announced that Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) will acquire MBO Cinemas.
In what seems like an inevitable Facebook post, the well-known cinema said a short but sad farewell to their patrons.
New admin for MBO Cinemas
On 10th May 2021, MBO Cinemas took to their official Facebook page to say their farewell. They wrote, “It’s been a while [waving hand emoji]. Signing out now.”
This is their first Facebook post following their last one on 19th February 2021 – more than 2 months ago. And this will presumably be their last Facebook post as MBO Cinemas.

The farewell post has since been reshared by numerous netizens, with over 11,000 reactions and 2,800 shares garnered at the time of writing. Many came out to thank the cinema for the fond memories they made while visiting their locations in Malaysia, and their service too.

On 11th May, MBO Cinemas commented on their post addressing their sad patrons. “Admin signing out, new admin coming soon. See you guys around, stay safe! Selamat Hari Raya” they said.

In response, GSC commented with a meme of Shrek – a pop-culture animated icon – that had the caption, “You! You’re coming with me.”
MBO Cinemas will be undergoing rebranding
Those who have been following the news would know that MBO Cinemas was reportedly facing liquidation after suffering greatly from the pandemic, as reported by The Edge Markets in March 2021.
The cinema’s CEO even launched a #StayStrongMBOCinemas campaign back in October 2020 to help clear out limited-edition merchandise and raise in funds.
But since then, there have been reports that GSC will acquire MBO Cinema’s assets, and that the deal is set to be completed by the end of June 2021. According to a report by The Star on 4th March, once the deal is finalised, MBO Cinemas will undergo rebranding.
MBO Cinemas says goodbye to patrons
The pandemic has caused many businesses to shut down their operations permanently. And MBO Cinema is just the latest victim. While we bid farewell to them, we can take comfort in the fact that it will be rebranded under GSC, and cinema goers can look forward to supporting the cinema industry again once we get the pandemic under control.
