McDonald’s Malaysia Mala Sundae
April Fool’s may be over a week behind us, but food brands are not done with the gag food combinations, it seems. On 9th April 2026, McDonald’s Malaysia launched the eye-boggling Mala Sundae, a hot-and-cold dessert you didn’t know you needed.
Here’s all that you need to know about the sundae – including the taste.
Spicy and sweet flavours in a sundae
Steaming-hot mala broth and ice-cold sundae are two foods enjoyed separately – typically. But our local McDonald’s is bringing the two together with their latest sundae flavour, Mala Sundae, priced at RM6.13. The sundae is part of the fast food chain’s new Mala series, with fried chicken and sundae all flavoured with tongue-numbing Sichuan pepper, star anise, and a touch of citrus.
Available for a limited time only, from 9th to 15th April, the sundae features sweet mala sauce that’s poured over the usual swirls of vanilla ice cream in a cup. We hawk-eyed the process of making the new sundae flavour out of curiosity, and saw a scoop of thick, goopy mala sauce poured over the ice cream.
The result is surprisingly satisfying, even though the bits of chilli left intact in the mala sauce looks lowkey terrifying. Even the workers at the McDonald’s branch we visited was curious about the flavour.
You’re first hit with the savoury flavours of sichuan peppers, before the sweetness and coolness of the ice cream swirls over your tongue. The tongue-numbing part comes last, with the spiciness hitting the back of the throat. The spice fades pretty quickly, but it builds in almost no time.
While outlandish, the combination works – even though you might just need ice cream to cool off from this ice cream.
McDonald’s releases Mala Sundae
We’ve seen our share of odd ice cream flavours before, but mala is a new one that spice kakis will want to try. It’ll satisfy both your sweet and spicy cravings.
