Oranje Tulip: Freshly Made & Authentic Dutch Stroopwafels For RM9 In Subang Jaya

Oranje Tulip in Subang Jaya

If you’re into sugary-sweet treats with caramelly notes and a satisfying crunch, you’ll love Oranje Tulip in SS15, Subang Jaya. This new snack shop’s claim to popularity is its freshly-made and authentic Dutch stroopwafels – it’s the first speciality stroopwafel shop in Malaysia.

For the uninitiated, stroopwafel is a famous treat from the Netherlands. It has the grid-like appearance of a waffle but the crunchiness of a cookie. Between the two pieces of cookie is a caramel filling that is syrupy when hot and becomes sticky as it cools down.

When something is “the first in Malaysia”, you know we have to check it out. Ergo, here’s our review of Oranje Tulip’s stroopwafels.

Freshly baked Dutch stroopwafels with gooey caramel sauce

Naming your shop after the signature food you serve makes sense. But by this theory, Oranje Tulip would have to be both a fruit market and a flower shop, selling oranges and tulips.

The power of the Internet led us to this snack shop, which makes authentic stroopwafels (from RM9) per order using a recipe learned in the Netherlands.

This discovery is significant, because before Oranje Tulip stroopwafels in Malaysia were only sold in pre-made packages online or at grocery stores. Now, we can enjoy these handheld disc-shaped cookies fresh and hot.

Besides the original stroopwafels with caramel filling, you can have them drizzled with chocolate sauce and sprinkled with toppings such as nuts, salted pretzels, shredded coconuts, and roasted marshmallows.

The shop applies the toppings to only half of each stroopwafel, allowing you to still taste the original version.

Food at Oranje Tulip

Savouring the Original Stroopwafel (RM9) with caramel filling was a battle between the brain and the heart. Our brain was telling us that the snack was too sweet for our health but our heart was urging us to take another bite. It was sinfully addictive.

The cinnamon powder on top made the stroopwafel taste like a gingerbread cookie, going well with the caramel sauce.

The Stroopwafel With Chocolate Sauce and Roasted Marshmallows (RM15) was also incredibly sweet, almost diabetic-inducing – our blood was crying for insulin. But individuals with an insatiable sweet tooth would love this.

The marshmallows were lightly torched, giving these white pillows a sun-kissed tan. This stroopwafel was akin to s’mores, but more delicate. We enjoyed the contrasting textures between the marshmallows and the cookies.

We also tried the Stroopwafel With Chocolate Sauce and Coconut (RM15), which looked like a division between the Sahara desert and a snow field. Despite its sweetness, we appreciated the added milky aroma from the coconut flakes. It elevated the stroopwafel beyond being simply sugared.

After finishing all three stroopwafels, our palates desperately needed a strong, leaning towards bitter, black coffee to wash it all down. Even with the plethora of toppings to elevate the stroopwafels, the original version was our favourite. Its flavour fell just before turning cloyingly sweet, and the cinnamon powder added the perfect finishing touch.
