Pickleball courts in Klang Valley

Pickleball is everywhere. And Malaysia is no exception. Many of us have been swopping out our badminton racquets for pickleball paddles – it’s the new black of racquet sports and recreational activities.

From buzzing community hubs to sleek indoor arenas, we rounded up 10 indoor and outdoor pickleball courts in Klang Valley for those who are new to or knee-deep in the pickleball craze alike.

What is pickleball?

If you’re going, “What is pickleball?”, we’re here to help break down its basic rules and the sport’s popularity for you.

The sport is a fun cross between tennis, badminton, and ping pong. Single or doubles players use a smooth paddle to hit a lightweight wiffle ball over a 3-feet-high net – that means less running and more play. Games are played on a court that’s similar in size to a doubles badminton court, and about one-third the size of a tennis court.

Game rules are straightforward and not much different than badminton or tennis. A ball is hit back and forth, and a player loses a point when they are unable to return the ball or breaks a rule. Players will hit, smash, or rally to one-up their opponent and score 11 points first.

As for its history, pickleball was created in the US way back in 1965. Though it was invented as a children’s backyard game, the sport became massively popular among grown-ups in 2019 – likely because it’s a beginner-friendly and lighthearted sport that can be enjoyed by the young and the retired picklers, or pickleball players.

Is there a dress code for pickleball?

There’s no specific dress code or uniform to play pickleball, but showing up in comfortable athletic attire and non-marking shoes is always recommended. If you’re opting for an outdoor court, packing sunscreen will be essential.

As for gear, you can opt to purchase your own paddle. Otherwise, most pickleball courts have equipment for rent.
