PitboyBBQ at Bandar Bukit Puchong
In Klang Valley, there are plenty of places to go for good food. What may be tough to find is a really good American-style barbecue spot that marinates, smokes, and grills slabs of meat as they do on shows on the now-defunct Food Network channel.
That’s until we came across this restaurant, which has hefty beef pastrami for under RM50 on their menu.
Cue PitboyBBQ, a barbecue restaurant in Bandar Bukit Puchong. Here, you can get worth-it beef pastrami that brings to mind the ones from New York’s famous Katz’s Delicatessen, and also a pulled lamb burger for under RM20.
What is PitboyBBQ?
The PitboyBBQ outlet in Puchong.
PitboyBBQ is a locally owned Texas-style barbecue restaurant with multiple branches in Klang Valley. They specialise in smoked meats, inspired by authentic Texas techniques. Only serving halal, imported beef from Australia and New Zealand, the restaurant ensures that their food is carefully prepared and cooked to perfection in order to deliver a satisfying dining experience to patrons.
The food at PitboyBBQ
We tried two menu items from their restaurant, their signature beef pastriami sandwich and smoked pulled lamb burger. Here are our thoughts:
Smoked pulled lamb burger
The smoked pulled lamb burger is a plate of juicy lamb goodness packed between a sliced bun and a side of fries that’s cooked to crispy perfection.
When the burger arrived at our table, the cheese and sauce melted and mixed with the oozing oil from the smoked lamb. It was a mouthwatering visual. Tearing into the burger with our hands, we found the lamb to be perfectly cooked, melt-in-your-mouth tender, and incredibly juicy. Having crisp fries on the side adds another layer of texture to the meal, but we didn’t mind soggy fries as we were cleaning up the dripping sauce with them.
Overall, the burger was good, but the culinary experience would be more enjoyable if the burger bun were sturdier. Since it absorbed the sauce and juices from the lamb, it became slightly soggy, and picking it up was a messy challenge.
This burger’s original price is RM28, but if you dine at the restaurant, you can catch their Super Saver Lunch menu from 12pm to 3pm to enjoy the burger at only RM16.90.
Beef pastrami sandwich
The beef pastrami sandwich is the star of the show.
For RM49.90, you’re served 200g of smoked brisket, which has been brined for seven days and smoked for 12 hours, packed between toasted sourdough bread. Between the layer of meat and bread is a layer of mozzarella cheese, and on the side are heaps of French fries and coleslaw.
We could feel the hefty weight of the beef right from the moment we picked the sandwich up. It was so packed that smoked meat threatened to spill out of the sandwich.
Unlike the lamb burger, the beef isn’t as oily, and the crispy bread perfectly holds the sandwich together. The first bite with the crunchy pickle felt like briefly ascending to barbecue heaven. The beef was tender, juicy, and had that good smoky taste that tickles your taste buds, while the mozzarella had a satisfying cheese pull that you might want to whip out your phone for. But the crunchy sourdough bread was what really tied the whole meal together.
Overall, it was a fulfilling balance of tender smoked meat and crispy buttered bread. This is definitely a must-try menu item.
