M’sian policeman consoles elderly auntieÂ
It’s never easy to lose a loved one. For the elderly and their partners, it often means losing someone they spent years with and rely on in their homes, often in situations where their grown-up kids are off to work.
A viral Facebook post about an elderly auntie details the tragic moment when her husband was found no longer breathing, but she was left only to worry about him as she was unable to climb up the stairs to check on him. But she was not alone – a policeman who arrived at her house after receiving a police report that her husband had passed away took the time to feed her, even telling her “Don’t be afraid, we are here to help you” to console her.Â
Auntie left to worry about husband upstairsÂ
The story was shared by Teyobeng on Facebook in a series of posts. In the first post dated 8th February 2021, he shared that the elderly couple lived in a modest 2-storey home. They stayed on separate floors of the house as they couldn’t move around easily due to health issues. Because of this, the elderly auntie was unaware of what had happened to her husband when he passed away near the upstairs bathroom floor.

The couple often has family members and neighbours dropping by to bring food, but this visit wasn’t like previous ones. He visited them on Monday, 8th February, to bring them food and ask if they wanted to move to a nursing home for constant care.
The elderly auntie was keen on doing so, but when he went to her husband for confirmation, he found that her husband had collapsed and wasn’t breathing near the bathroom located upstairs. According to Teyobeng’s last conversation with the elderly auntie’s husband, the husband had said he was fine and only had a poor appetite.
Scared to worry the elderly auntie further, as she was already concerned about her husband who had previously suffered a stroke, Teyobeng first called the ambulance and notified the police. They confirmed that the elderly auntie’s husband had passed away. In an effort to comfort her, the policeman that arrived took the time to sit with the elderly auntie and feed her, and even helped her move around the house.

In another Facebook post, Teyobeng shared that the elderly auntie was still nervous about her husband. Seeing her in distress, the policeman told her, “Auntie, jangan takut. Saya ada sini,” to ease her worries every now and then. This can be translated from Malay to English as, “Auntie, don’t be afraid. We are here to help you.”
The policeman also repeated these words to her husband while patting his leg when he went to check on him, saying “We are here to help you”, even though he was no longer breathing.

Upon hearing the story of this elderly auntie, State Assemblywoman for N.27 Balakong, Wong Siew Ki, reached out to her as well. On 9th February, she shared that the elderly auntie had been safely brought to a nearby nursing home where senior citizens are cared for. Her house has also since been sterilised in an extra effort to keep her safe from COVID-19.
Policeman consoles auntie after her husband passed away
We should always be reaching out to the elderly community, whether it’s during or even after the COVID-19 pandemic, as they are often in need of an extra pair of helping hands.
So we applaud this kind policeman who took the time to comfort and feed this elderly auntie going through a difficult time – after all, it could happen to any one of us in future.
