‘Princess Mononoke’ to re-release at cinemas in Malaysia
Sure, we can cosy up at home to a Studio Ghibli movie at any given time of the day. But nothing quite compares to seeing a Ghibli film on the big screen, with its art and aesthetics blown up.
Following the rerun of Howl’s Moving Castle in April, another Hayao Miyazaki film is set to make its return to local cinemas as part of an ongoing celebration of Studio Ghibli’s 40th anniversary. It’s none other than the masterpiece, Princess Mononoke.
Back to the big screen after 30 years
The Miyazaki-Ghibli classic, which was released in 1997, will rerun on 11th September 2025.
Only scant details have been shared about the movie’s rerun in Malaysia by regional film studio distributor mm2 Entertainment on Facebook. But the 30-year-old film was recently released in a restored 4K version in IMAX theatres in the US and Canada. The restoration was directly overseen by Studio Ghibli’s own Atsushi Okui.
We’re hoping for the same format re-release in Malaysia.

Princess Mononoke will be screened in its original Japanese version in Malaysia, with English, Bahasa Melayu, and Chinese subtitles. Advanced ticket sales are not yet available, but you can catch the film at selected Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) and TGV Cinemas locations in the country.

For the uninitiated, Princess Mononoke is a hand-drawn, animated film that intricately weaves together themes of fantasy, history, and top-tier animation through the journey of Ashitaka, a young warrior caught in the strife between mankind and the forest spirits. It’s often regarded as one of the best animation films ever made, with a musical score from composer Joe Hisaishi adding even more depth to the film.
Ghibli’s masterpiece ‘Princess Mononoke’ to screen in Malaysian cinemas
Studio Ghibli fans, it’s time to make that pilgrimage to the cinemas again – not that we’re complaining. This September, Ghibli and movie lovers can witness Princess Mononoke in a grand format, whether for the umpteenth time or as a first-timer, on the big screen.
Look out for these other movies that are hitting the big screens in 2025 too.
