Even though the days of Movement Control Orders are behind us, a lot of us are still opting to cook at home to stay on a budget and eat mindfully. As long as you can whip up instant noodles, you can have a go at these 12 easy resepi ayam that you can cook in under 30 minutes.


1. Honey garlic chicken – 15 minutes

You might think that honey only belongs in desserts and sweet dishes, but it’s actually a really versatile ingredient that can be incorporated into savoury dishes as well. This honey garlic chicken is a testament to how honey can make a chicken dish flavourful. 

Ingredients: 

  • 2 tsp olive oil
  • 700g boneless, skinless chicken breasts, chopped into small cubes
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 3 tbsp honey
  • 3 tbsp soya sauce
  • 3 cloves of minced garlic
  • ¼ tsp red pepper flakes

Serves 2-3

Steps: 

  1. Heat olive oil in a pan over medium-high heat.
  2. Season chicken with salt and pepper.
  3. Place the chicken into the pan and cook for 3 to 4 minutes, till they are brown on one side.

You can start making the glaze while the chicken is cooking.

  1. Whisk honey, soya sauce, garlic, and red pepper flakes in a small bowl.
  2. Once the chicken cubes are brown on one side, add the sauce into the pan and coat the cubes evenly.
  3. Let the chicken cook for another 4 to 5 minutes before serving.

2. Teriyaki chicken – 15 minutes

A lot of people have the assumption that in order to make chicken teriyaki at home, they would need to buy ready-made teriyaki sauce from their nearest Shojikiya, but this recipe proves that making your own teriyaki sauce is not as complicated as you think. 

All you need are 7 basic ingredients and 15 minutes of your time to whip up this meal.

Ingredients: 

  • 1 tbsp cooking oil
  • 600g boneless, skinless chicken thighs, chopped into bite-sized pieces
  • ¼ cup soya sauce
  • 3 tbsp light brown sugar or white granulated sugar
  • 3 tbsp rice wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 2 cloves of minced garlic

Serves 2

Steps:

  1. Heat cooking oil in a large pan over medium heat.
  2. Add chicken into the pan, stirring occasionally until it is lightly browned and crispy on the outside.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together soya sauce, sugar, vinegar, and sesame oil.
  4. Throw minced garlic into the pan with the chicken, saute for around 30 seconds, then pour the sauce in and coat the meat evenly with it.
  5. Continue stirring for about 2 to 3 minutes until the sauce thickens into a glaze.
  6. You can also sprinkle some sesame seeds and spring onions over it as garnish before serving.

3. Chicken wraps – 20 minutes

Not only are chicken wraps filling and healthy, but they’re also easy to make and the filling can be customised based on your own preference.

Ingredients: 

  • 500g chicken breasts, cut into strips
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tbsp cooking oil
  • Tortilla wraps
  • Vegetables of your choice – you can use sliced carrots, cucumbers, lettuce, tomatoes for a start
  • ¼ cup ranch dressing
  • ½ cup mozzarella cheese

Serves 2

Steps:

  1. Season chicken breasts with salt and pepper.
  2. Heat cooking oil in a pan over medium-high heat.
  3. Place the seasoned chicken breasts into the pan, allowing each side to cook for 7 minutes.
  4. Place tortilla wraps on a flat surface and put a few strips of the cooked chicken breasts on them. Top with a handful of vegetables, ranch dressing and mozzarella cheese, then fold into a tight burrito.
  5. Place the wraps on the heated pan and let them toast for around a minute on each side until they’re golden brown.
  6. Cut the wraps into 2 and serve.

4. Stir-fry Chinese-style chicken – 25 minutes

We Asians love our rice, and if you’re looking for a dish with gravy that you can flood your rice with, this stir-fry Chinese-style chicken might just do the trick.

Ingredients: 

  • 800g boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 3 tbsp fish sauce
  • 2 tbsp sambal
  • 1 tbsp sesame or vegetable oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, roughly chopped
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 tbsp minced ginger
  • 1 cup sliced scallions

Serves 3-4

Steps:

  1. Marinate chicken with 2 tbsps of fish sauce and 1 tbsp of sambal.
  2. Heat oil in a large wok or skillet over medium-high heat.
  3. Once the oil is hot and sizzling, add the marinated chicken and let it cook for 4 minutes on one side until lightly browned.
  4. Throw in onions then stir-fry the mixture for 2 minutes.
  5. In a separate bowl, mix sugar, vinegar, water, garlic, ginger, and the remaining fish sauce and sambal to create a sauce.
  6. Then, pour the sauce into the pan, add scallions, and cook for 2 more minutes before serving.

5. Chicken pasta – 15 minutes

Those who love carbs will appreciate this 15-minute chicken pasta dish that can be made in bulk and tastes as good even after storing in the fridge – great for food-preppers. 

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups salted water
  • 300g pasta
  • 1 tsp salt, and more, to taste
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • ½ onion, chopped
  • ½ red bell pepper, chopped
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 2 chicken breasts, cut into strips
  • ½ tsp pepper
  • ½ garlic powder
  • 1 cup marinara sauce
  • ½ cup mozzarella cheese

Serves 2

Steps:

  1. Bring salted water to a boil.
  2. Pour pasta into the boiling water and add 1 tsp salt into the water. Let the pasta cook for around 15 minutes, until al dente.
  3. In a separate skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat.
  4. Add onion and bell pepper into the skillet to cook for 1 to 2 minutes, then add garlic, and saute for 30 seconds.
  5. Add in chicken breasts, season it with salt, pepper, and garlic powder and let it cook on each side for 5 minutes.
  6. Pour in marinara sauce, cover the pan, and let it simmer for another 5 minutes.
  7. Spoon the cooked pasta into the sauce mixture, mix well, and top with mozzarella cheese.

6. Chicken soup – 30 minutes

Nothing screams comfort food more than a steaming bowl of chicken soup, especially on a rainy night or after a long day. Thankfully, with this 30-minute recipe, you won’t have to boil this soup for 3 hours. 

Ingredients: 

  • 2 cans chicken broth
  • 2 cups baby carrots
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • ⅛ tsp celery salt
  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, halved
  • 1 tbsp cilantro, chopped

Serves 1

Steps: 

  1. Boil chicken broth over medium-high heat.
  2. Add in carrots, onion, garlic, and celery salt.
  3. Turn the heat to low, add in chicken breasts, cover the lid, and let it simmer for 20 minutes.
  4. Remove the cooked chicken breasts, cut it into smaller chunks, then return it to the pot before adding cilantro.
  5. Stir for a few seconds before serving.

7. Chicken fried rice – 15 minutes

Fried rice is like the catch-all dish to cook when you need to clear out your fridge. And this recipe that can be whipped up in 15 minutes will be your go-to on days when you have no idea what to cook. 

Ingredients

  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp water
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cups cooked white rice
  • 2 tbsps soya sauce
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup chopped and grilled chicken meat

Serves 2

Steps:

  1. In a small bowl, beat egg and water together.
  2. Melt butter in a large skillet or wok over medium-low heat.
  3. Add the egg mixture into the wok and let it sit for 1 to 2 minutes.
  4. Remove the egg from the skillet and slice it into shreds.
  5. Heat oil in the same skillet, add in onions, and saute for around 5 minutes, until it is soft.
  6. Add rice, soya sauce, black pepper, and chicken.
  7. Stir-fry everything for about 5 minutes, then toss in the shredded egg before serving.

Popcorn chicken is not a main course, but it makes for an addictive light bite or midday snack, and is well-loved by all, kids and adults alike. 

Ingredients: 

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp ground black pepper
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tbsps lemon juice
  • 4 to 6 tbsps oil
  • 3 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, chopped into bite-sized cubes
  • Salt, to taste

Serves 6

Steps:

  1. Mix flour, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper together in a bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, beat eggs and lemon juice with a whisk.
  3. Heat oil in a large pot over medium heat.
  4. Dip chicken cubes into the flour mixture, then the egg mixture, and again into the flour mixture to create a crunchy batter.
  5. Drop the coated chicken pieces a few at a time into the bubbling oil and let them fry for about 8 minutes.
  6. Remove the chicken pieces once they’re golden brown and lightly dab a paper towel on them to absorb excess oil. Season the fried chicken with salt.
  7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 with the remaining chicken pieces.

9. Chicken stir-fry noodles – 30 minutes

Team Noodles peeps can try this chicken stir-fry noodle recipe for a simple, but wholesome meal. 

Ingredients: 

  • 2 cups salted water
  • 350g rice noodles
  • 3 tbsps vegetable oil
  • 450g boneless, skinless chicken breasts, sliced into strips
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup broccoli, chopped
  • 100g shiitake or portobello mushroom, sliced
  • 1 tbsp peeled and shredded fresh ginger
  • ½ cup chicken broth
  • 2 tbsp soya sauce
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp cornstarch
  • Sesame oil, for drizzling

Serves 3-4

Steps:

  1. Boil salted water in a medium-sized pot.
  2. Add noodles and cook on medium heat for about 2 to 4 minutes.
  3. Drain the water and stir in 1 tbsp of vegetable oil.
  4. In a separate large wok or skillet, heat 2 tbsps of vegetable oil over high heat.
  5. Season chicken with salt and pepper, and place them onto the skillet and stir-fry for about 3 minutes.
  6. Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside.
  7. Add broccoli and mushrooms and saute for 1 minute, then add ginger and stir-fry for another 2 minutes.
  8. In another bowl, mix chicken broth, soya sauce, ketchup, and cornstarch.
  9. Add the cooked chicken, noodles, and broth mixture to the skillet and stir-fry for 3 minutes.
  10. Drizzle a few drops of sesame oil over the dish, and add some salt and pepper before serving.

10. Grilled chicken salad sandwich – 30 minutes

Ingredients: 

  • 450g chicken breasts, cut into strips
  • ½ tsp black pepper, and more, to taste
  • Salt, to taste
  • 3 tbsps vegetable oil
  • Mayonnaise, to taste
  • Butter, for spreading
  • 10 to 12 bread slices
  • Vegetables of your choice – you can use lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, or olives for a start

Serves 4-5

Steps:

  1. Season chicken with black pepper and salt, and set aside for 10 minutes.
  2. Heat oil in a pan over medium-high heat.
  3. Gently place the chicken strips onto the pan and let them grill for around 5 to 7 minutes on both sides on medium-low heat.
  4. Once the chicken is cooked, shred them into tiny pieces.
  5. In a mixing bowl, add in the shredded chicken, mayonnaise, salt, and black pepper and mix thoroughly to get the chicken spread.
  6. Butter the bread and toast them using a toaster, or place them on the pan over medium heat and toast for around 2 minutes on each side.
  7. Spread 1 to 2 tbsp of the chicken mixture on one side of a slice of toasted bread.
  8. Top with vegetables, and another slice of toasted bread to complete the sandwich.
  9. Cut the sandwich into smaller pieces or serve as is.

11. Korean fried chicken – 30 minutes

Ingredients: 

  • 3 ½ lb chicken wings
  • ½ salt
  • ½ black pepper
  • 1 tsp minced giner
  • 2/3 potato or corn starch
  • 1/3 cup peanutes (optional)
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • 3-4 large dried red chili peppers, seeded and cut crosswise
  • 1/4 cup soya sauce
  • 1/2 cup rice or corn syrup
  • 1 tbsp white vinegar
  • 1 tbsp mustard (optional)
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp toasted seasame seeds
  • Vegetable, peanut, or grapeseed oil

Makes 24-26 chicken wings

Steps:

  1. Season chicken with salt, ginger, and ground black pepper.
  2. Coat chicken with potato starch.
  3. Fry chicken wings over high heat, for about 12-13 minutes.
  4. Reheat oil and fry the wings again for 12-15 minutes.
  5. For the sauce, stir-fry minced garlic and dried red chilli pepper in cooking oil over medium high heat.
  6. Then add soya sauce, rice/corn syrup, vinegar, and mustard.
  7. Once bubbling, add brown sugar then remove from heat when sauce thickens.
  8. Coat the fried chicken in the sauce and serve.

12. Lemon chicken – 30 minutes

Ingredients: 

Marinade

  • 120g chicken brest
  • 1/2 lemon zest
  • 1 tsp garlic, crushed
  • 1 tbsp soya sauce
  • Salt, to taste
  • Pepper, to taste

Chicken breading

  • 50g flour
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 50g breadcrumps
  • 500ml oil
  • 60ml chicken stock

Lemon sauce

  • 60ml chicken stock
  • 1/2 lemon zest
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • 4 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp water
  • 1/2 tbsp corn flour

Serves 2

Steps:

  1. Cut chicken in half, lengthwise.
  2. Combine marinade ingredients with chicken & let rest for 20 minutes.
  3. Coat the marinaded chicken with flour, then eggs and breadcrumb.
  4. Deep fry chicken for about 3-4 minutes until golden brown.
  5. For the sauce, combine & boil chicken stock, lemon juice, and sugar.
  6. Mix in corn flour and water, until sauce thickens.
  7. Add chicken to sauce, and serve.
