12 Restaurants In Puchong Perfect For Catching Up With Friends Over Good Food

Restaurants in Puchong

Malaysians are foodies at heart. That’s why you can be sure that anyone who’s tried all the eats in neighbouring towns such as PJ and Subang will want to go on a nearby excursion to Puchong to discover new restaurants.

Here are 12 picks that are great for any celebratory occasion with family and friends, from a Japanese restaurant with top-notch service to an all-you-can-eat steamboat buffet with zero time limit listed among them.

1. Warakuya Garden – sashimi sets with extravagant presentations

Anyone who’s been to Bandar Puchong Jaya will notice “that corner lot” that’s home to a Japanese restaurant with fully occupied valet parking lots outside. In case you’re wondering, the name of the restaurant is Warakuya Garden, and its where every Puchong local head to for a Japanese dinner – sashimi, bento boxes, ramen, you name it.

Warakuya’s premium sushi sets are a novelty you won’t find anywhere else as it isn’t easy to replicate their grandiose presentation. But for casual dinners, there are plenty of options that’ll fill you up just as well.

Hire Katsu Mayo (RM17.90) comes with a sizable piece of breaded deep-fried pork tenderloin that’s topped off with an egg mayo mix. The meal comes with your standard bowl of miso soup as well as tofu and edamame. There’s even a side of kimchi you can dig into if the meat-heavy meal makes you feel a little jelak

Warakuya practices A+ hospitality too. Before COVID-19 struck, patrons waiting for their table could help themselves to the free-flow beverages outside, so they wouldn’t ever be too hangry and wind up leaving before being ushered to their table.

Inside, waiters would hand you wet towels and hair ties if your long hair gets in the way of your meal. If someone is celebrating a birthday, you could let a waiter know when you make a reservation and they’d sing a birthday song for the birthday baby in your group. It’s something to keep in mind for future celebrations, but because of COVID-19, we wouldn’t encourage extravagant gatherings at the moment.

4. Mushroom Culture – classic dai chow dishes made vegetarian

If you’ve ever driven around Bandar Puteri during peak dinner hours, you would’ve noticed the crowd gathering outside Mushroom Culture each time you pass by. You wouldn’t think that a full-fledged vegetarian restaurant would be so popular with the locals, but the long queues prove that you don’t need to have meat for a satisfying meal.

You’ll find classic delights on their menu such as Lemon Chicken, Yam Basket, and Sweet and Sour Pork.

Their mock meat can very well pass off as real pork and chicken. Delicious dishes aside, the restaurant also keeps their prices on the affordable side. A bowl of Lamb Curry will cost you RM15.90 while Spring Rolls are RM5.90/6 pcs

As long as you’re a fan of Chinese dai chow dishes, Mushroom Culture will earn your stamp of approval too.

5. Bumbu Bali – wholesome Indonesian meals

Bumbu Bali is one of the few Indonesian restaurants in Puchong, so that’s where all the locals go to for their Sate Lilit (RM18) and Nasi Campur (RM37) fix.

While Indonesian cuisine is indeed a close cousin to Malaysian food, there are certain things that they do differently – the types of sambal, cooking techniques, and even down to the marinade itself – that make us want to go back for more.

@yamunachandran

First-timers to Indonesian food will want to get their rice-based meals to start. Cumi Metumis (RM33) is a crowd-pleaser for its addictive stir-fried squid in chilli, while Siap Mempanggang (RM31) is a familiar choice made up of barbecued chicken with spicy coconut sauce.

Every main dish on the menu comes with rice, crackers, kangkung, and an array of sambal. You’re basically paying for a set meal, so no other add-ons are required unless you’re eager to try out more dishes.

6. Minato Yakitori – staple Japanese eats on a budget

Minato Yakitori used to be a hidden gem that only a handful of Puchong-ites knew about, but fast-forward to a couple of years – and it’s now one of the most beloved Japanese restaurants in the area.

Their yakitori menu isn’t as large or extensive as other places, but you’ll find all the essentials here such as Pork Belly (RM4/stick), Chicken Wing (RM5/stick), and Quail Egg (RM3/stick)

The set meals here come complete with a side of refreshing salad, miso soup, pickles and steamed rice.

Besides their grilled items, they also have other eats such as Tonkatsu Set (RM12) and Saba Shioyaki Set (RM15.90). The restaurant’s popularity can also be attributed to their affordable prices, especially when the food they serve is as value-for-money as it gets.

7. Ticket To Korea – cheesy Korean food

Ticket To Korea is a fusion Korean restaurant serving interesting, yet equally appetising, bites such as Kimchi Quesadilla (RM18.50) and Sweet Potato Pizza (RM36). If you do happen to make a trip over here, you’ll notice that almost every table has ordered the same dish – Cheese Pork Ribs (RM35/pax).

Diners need to order a minimum of 2 pax’s worth of ribs when getting this dish

The fall-off-the-bone tender ribs are marinated in a sweet and spicy chilli paste and served on a hot plate that’s filled to the brim with melted mozzarella and cheddar. You’re supposed to wrap the cheese around the rib before going in for a satisfying cheesy bite.

Besides ribs, you can also get thick, juicy slabs of freshly fried tonkatsu served in cheese.

For desserts, order the Rock Salt Popcorn Ice Cream (RM17.50). The scoops of vanilla ice cream are covered with homemade popcorn and served with a side of Himalaya salt for that sweet-savoury goodness in every bite.

8. Puchong Chettinad Mess – undiscovered gem for authentic banana leaf dishes

When the craving for banana leaf rice kicks in, most of us would head to Nirwana without a second thought as it’s the most well-known restaurant for the dish. If you’re interested in trying out new places, however, Puchong Chettinad Mess will not disappoint.

@gluttonbanker

The eatery is located in an obscure 2nd floor shoplot, which is why it’s a hidden gem even among the local community in the area. If you have trouble finding the spot, keep your eyes peeled for a snaking queue by the stairwell.

The banana leaf meal is priced at RM7, and comes with papadom, side dishes, as well as rice and sauces. They also have a bunch of sides that you can order to go with your rice like Chicken Varuval (RM6), Mutton Perattal (RM8), and Fried Fish (RM8)

9. Restoran Fu Gua Thong – a comforting bowl of bitter gourd soup

Walk past Restoran Fu Gua Thong and you might just think that it’s another neighbourhood dai chow restaurant, which is probably why they’ve included their signature dish in the restaurant name itself. Whenever you’re here, you have to get yourself a bowl of Fu Gua Thong or bitter gourd soup (RM9).

Even if you’re not a fan of the bitter taste, the soup is still worth a try. While the long cooking hours don’t rid the vegetable of its bitter taste, the heaps of fresh pork slices impart a distinct sweetness to the soup. If you’d like, you can also request that the chef add in some innards, which may just help in masking the sharp flavours of the bitter gourd.

We recommend you get a serving of the Fried Pork (RM7) to go along with the soup, especially if pork is your favourite choice of protein. After a few bites of this deep-fried snack, wash the grease down with a sip of hot soup.

10. Penang Liang Khee Tomyam Mee – build your own bowl of tom yum mee

Penang is not Malaysia’s “food paradise” for no reason – everyone’s always thrilled whenever a food chain from the island opens an outlet in Klang Valley. Liang Khee Tomyam Mee is one of the more recent eateries to set up shops outside of Penang and unsurprisingly, they’ve already garnered a loyal following of diners who swear by their tom yum mee.

@nicefoodmakegoodmood

Instead of the dish that you’d usually get in Thai restaurants, you get to build your own bowl of Penang Tom Yum and choose the ingredients you like over here – meatballs, sausages, pork slices, veggies. Add on noodles or rice of your choice, with selections such as porridge, yee mee, or bee hoon available. Prices start from RM0.30 to RM2 per ingredient.

For some variety, you can opt for other soup bases (from RM5.50) such as Chicken Soup, or Grandmother Pork Bone Soup, which is a hearty, comfort soup base that’s great with porridge too.

Whether you get your food recommendations from Google or your friends, Foo Hing Dim Sum will definitely be one of the top mentions for the best eats in Puchong. If you’re planning to make a weekend visit to this iconic dim sum shop, be prepared to wait for at least half an hour due to the crowd.

@audfoodiary

By the time you’ve made it in, you’re probably twice as hungry as you were before. Start off your meal with the indulgent Special Superior Dumpling Soup (RM13) that’s served in a small soup bowl and contains a single massive dumpling.

For those who want to take a break from the oil-laden mala hotpot broths, give Watercress Hotpot a try. Their hotpot soups come teeming with watercress, making it one of the healthier alternatives to go for. Also, the vegetable is known for its “cooling” effect on our bodies, according to TCM, which means any day in Malaysia is a good day to pop by for lunch here.
