Malaysian fans were thrilled when Shawn Mendes announced his Asia Tour and Malaysia was on the list. But before playing to a sold-out Axiata Arena last Saturday, on 5th October 2019, the superstar surprised fans by opting to take a 4-hour bus ride to KL from Singapore, instead of flying over here.
Some of his fans who were camping out at Changi Airport in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur International Airport were disappointed that he hadn’t flown over, but Malaysian fans who were at the Johor Bahru customs got a happy surprise.
Fans on social media were sent into a tizzy
One lucky fan caught an unexpected glimpse of Shawn Mendes and took to Twitter to share a video of the superstar strolling by her.
She tweeted, “Stuck at the JB custom for 2 hours today with Shawn Mendes was the luckiest thing that ever happened”, and emphasised it with two crying emoticons at the end.

Netizens who caught wind of the lucky sighting responded with envy. Twitter user @EjaddG even commented that he wished he was one of the lucky commuters who just happened to walk right in front of the famous singer, seeming pretty clueless as to who Shawn was.

Not everyone was so lucky though. Two Shawn Mendes fans who go by the Twitter handles @_adlinalove and @knesuh took to the social media platform to express their woes of not being able to catch a glimpse of the Canadian singer at the airport because the VIP had decided to take the bus instead.

Concert-goers sang Negaraku to welcome Shawn Mendes to M’sia
After the surprise move Shawn pulled earlier in the day, concert-goers had something up their sleeves too. The 9,000-strong crowd joined together for a rendition of Malaysia’s national anthem as a way to welcome the superstar to the country.

Following that, fans were treated to a set of about 20 songs including hits like ‘Stitches’, ‘Treat You Better’, ‘Mercy’ – and of course, the recent song ‘Senorita’ – without Camila, unfortunately.
When Shawn switched up a line in the lyrics to his recent hit ‘If I Can’t Have You’ to “I’m in Malaysia and I got this view”, it was met with screams of approval from fans. Twitter user @Lee_Rynn7 documented the moment in a tweet. See it here.
The singer also held a fan Q&A session for his KL tour stop, as is the routine for him. One fan asked him which band he would like to collaborate with, to which he responded that if he could go back in time – it would have to be One Direction.
When another fan brought up his relationship with singer Camila Cabello, he spoke of their shared love for coffee first thing in the morning, and gushed about how Camila is so good at coming up with random topics to talk about. This sweet moment was, of course, met with a chorus of aww from fans.
But it was the heartfelt thanks and video that Shawn posted to his Instagram account afterwards that made fans go weak in the knees.
He captioned the video with, “Hey KL i felt an overwhelming amount of love from you last night. Thank you so much 🖤”

Shawn Mendes concert in KL
It’s safe to say that fans were impressed both by the Canadian pop star’s vocals and his humble ride of choice in this leg of his Asia Tour. While it was a night to remember for the 9,000-odd fans who attended the concert, we’re sure Shawn left with fond memories of his own too. After all, it isn’t every day that one gets serenaded by a national anthem in place of a ballad.
