Siti Nurhaliza binti Tarudin, fondly known as Dato’ Sri Siti Nurhaliza, is a name that resonates with music lovers not only in Malaysia but across the world. Born on 11th January 1979, this Pahang-born songstress has an extraordinary vocal talent that has earned her a place as one of Malaysia’s most beloved and celebrated singers.

From a young age, it was evident that Siti possessed a rare gift. Encouraged and supported by her parents, she began to participate in local singing competitions as a child as early as her pre-school years at Sekolah Tabika Perkep, Temerloh. At the age of six years old, she sang Sirih Pinang, which is a Malay traditional song for the year-end event. During her primary years, particularly at the age of twelve, she sang the patriotic song Bahtera Merdeka at Kuala Lipis Carnival in conjunction with the Nyanyian Bulan Kemerdekaan and became a champion in the contest.

While her exquisite talent was shown during her early years, it is also said that she inherited her precocious musical talent and singing flair from her late great-grandfather Haji Md Din, who was known as a masterful gambus player, captivating listeners with his skillful fingers dancing on the strings. Dating back to his years as a musician, he is often seen performing folklore stories through his melodies in the neighbourhood. His talent was passed down to his son, Siti’s grandfather, who carried the family’s melodic torch by becoming a famous violinist at the time.

Additionally, Siti’s mother, Siti Salmah Bachik, also known as Mak Siti, is a singer and played a significant role in nurturing her daughter’s interest in music through developing her exceptional vocal talents and becoming the renowned singer she is today. It was through her mother that Siti began to learn traditional songs and began performing during special occasions and events as early as twelve years old.

2. She married a businessman in 2006

The announcement of her marriage plans with the 47-year-old businessman brought many speculations about the singer, as her chosen partner was recently divorced from his partner, Tengku Zawyah Tengku Izham. Following her announcement of marriage with Datuk K, she was accused of being a homewrecker and having stolen another woman’s husband. Siti responded to the allegations following a press conference, as reported by Malaysia Kini, stating that, “I have done no wrong and it is better to keep silent and be patient”.

At the same time, Datuk K also responded to the allegation at the same press conference, saying that “Siti had in no way any connection with the divorce.” He also went on to express how he first fell in love with Siti after he visited her at her Kuala Lipis home, where she was dressed simply in a batik sarong and T-shirt.

The couple eventually got married on August 21, 2006, despite the allegations and controversy, and the controversy was soon a thing of the past for the iconic singer. Her motherhood journey, on the other hand, was not a walk in the park, as it came with a lot of struggles and patience for the legendary singer to be called a mother.

Siti delivered her first baby in 2018, named Siti Aafiyah, after 11 hard years of trying to conceive. Though Siti was very eager to have a child as soon as her marriage life started, she had to remain extremely patient. The 37-year-old mom shared her expression of waiting to have a child. In an interview with NST, she said, “My hopes stayed alive because I always believe that rezeki (gift) comes in many forms and Allah will eventually grant what I wish for as He knows what is right for me”.

She also went on to share that her newborn baby was conceived through in vitro fertilisation (IVF), which was something she thought about after three years of marriage. In 2021, Siti welcomed her second baby, Mohammad Afwa, who was also conceived through IVF. This pop star’s journey into motherhood is surely a source of inspiration for those who are trying to conceive.

Her teenage years were a time when she reached a milestone in her musical career. As she continued singing, Siti participated in not one but many singing competitions to express her musical talent. One event that prominently elevated her growth was the 1995 RTM Juara Bintang competition. With the guidance of Adnan Abu Hassan, a famous Malaysian music composer, she had guidance while exercising her vocal performance.

She ultimately won the contest. Soon after, she was granted a contract with Suria Records, and in 1996, at the age of 16, she released her first self-titled album, Siti Nurhaliza, which marked the beginning of an illustrious music career.

Despite the fact that completing her first album was a struggle as she needed to balance working on her album with her preparations for the SPM examination, Siti managed to strike a balance, and her first album was a major success, which paved the way for her subsequent albums.

Siti held a successful solo concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London on 1st April, 2005, making her the very first Southeast Asian singer to have ever performed a solo concert. Known as one of the world’s most prestigious and iconic concert venues, performing at the legendary venue is a dream come true and a significant milestone in Siti’s career. It was from this concert that the major press in Britain taught her to be “Asia’s Celine Dion” due to her powerful vocals and outstanding performances.

After her successful performance, Siit went on to produce several other albums, such as Transkripsi (2006), Hadiah Daripada Hati(2007), Lentera Timur(2008), and Tahajjud Cinta(2009), all of which received huge success, making her the iconic musical prowess with the most number one singles of any other artist in Malaysia, which dominated the Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, and Indonesia radio stations by storm.

With over 25 years of experience in the music industry, Siti is not only a renowned singer but also a jack of all trades. Over the years of being a singer, she also took the liberty to expand her growth as a successful businesswoman. Her first business venture started in 2018 when she launched her very own brand of tea called Ctea, offering a variety of tea blends cultivated from the foothills of Mount Kinabalu, Sabah. The well-received brand from both her fans and tea enthusiasts alike showcases her acumen as a businesswoman.

However, her venture into the business world is no walk in the park. While this musical prowess appears to be both confident and eloquent in her musical career, with the ability to sing in not just one but several languages, as seen during her recent mesmerising rendition of Munbe Vaa on January 28th at the AR Rahman’s Concert in Bukit Jalil, she admits that she lacks confidence in speaking English. During an interview with Syok, Siti mentioned that she felt insecure speaking English as she grew up in a household that spoke entirely in the national language.

“I was raised in a family that does not use English to communicate. I grew up speaking Malay, so it is easier for me to speak that language.”

Nevertheless, instead of seeing her lack of confidence as a barrier, Siti developed her self-confidence through her business ventures, which imparted her the skills and confidence necessary to expand her business.

She then went on to launch her own skincare business in 2010, called SimplySiti. As someone who has been on numerous covers of magazines and beauty brands and someone who loves make-up, Siti gathered her experience by learning through her experience before proceeding to begin her personal skincare line. In an exclusive interview with Tatler Asia, Siti mentioned, “I’ve been the face of many beauty brands prior to establishing SimplySiti. It was from that experience that I began learning about the business in order to start my own beautybecause I’ve always loved make-up!”

With over 10 years in the beauty industry, the brand is much loved by her fans and make-up enthusiasts alike. Designed and manufactured in South Korea with the incorporation of Korean herbs, Siti expressed her accomplishment in the interview for being the first Malaysian brand to acquire the halal standard in South Korea.

Years of her venture into the business world bagged her the title of Celebrity Entrepreneur Of The Year (Beauty & Health) in 2021. As reported by NST, Siti mentioned that “this award has motivated me to continue to strive for the best, whether in business or entertainment”.

With over a decade of experience in both her musical career and business ventures, it is no wonder that this legendary diva is known to be one of the highest-paid Malaysian entertainers.
