With a long weekend ahead for many Malaysians, and Kuala Lumpur folks set to enjoy not just one but two public holidays over a weekend, you’ll want to take note of this piece of news. Road closures are set to take place in parts of KL and also Selangor, starting from 30th January and lasting till 2nd February 2026, in light of the Thaipusam celebrations.

With thousands of Hindu devotees expected to attend the Thaipusam festival on 1st February in Batu Caves, traffic preparations are underway to facilitate smooth traffic flow for the chariot processions.

According to a report by The Star and Bernama, seven roads around the Batu Caves area and 12 intersections in KL are set to be closed off for Thaipusam celebrations from 30th January till 3rd February. The road closures around these areas will take place in stages and selected time frames.

These are the confirmed dates, roads, and times of the traffic disruptions:

Seven roads around the Batu Caves area will be closed off for Thaipusam celebrations from 30th January till 3rd February. The affected roads are:

  1. Kampung Melayu Batu Caves Selantan
  2. Slip road from Jalan Lingkaran Tengah 2 towards Batu Caves Temple
  3. Jalan Perusahaan leading to Batu Caves Temple
  4. Jalan Lingkaran Tengah 2 slip road from Sri Gombak to Jalan Perusahaan
  5. Jalan Seri Batu Caves 8 / Jalan Batu Caves Lama junction
  6. Seri Batu Caves traffic light junction
  7. Batu Caves Bypass slip road towards the main entrance of Batu Caves Temple

At a press conference held at Batu Caves, Selangor’s police chief, Commissioner Datuk Shazeli Kahar, announced that road closures would occur in stages. He also stated that 166 officers, along with 1,354 rank-and-file personnel, would be stationed at the locations.

Meanwhile, a total of 12 intersections in KL will be closed and diverted in stages from 9pm on 30th January to 3pm on 2nd February.

The 12 intersections affected are:

  1. Jalan Leboh Ampang – Jalan Perak
  2. Jalan Tun Perak – Jalan Pudu
  3. Jalan Tun Tang Cheng Lock – Jalan Sultan
  4. Jalan Sultan – Jalan Hang Jebat
  5. Jalan Sultan – Jalan Petaling
  6. Jalan Sultan – Jalan Panggung
  7. Jalan Sultan – Jalan Tun HS Lee
  8. Jalan Hang Kasturi – Jalan Sultan Mohamed
  9. Jalan Munshi Abdullah – Jalan Dang Wangi
  10. Jalan Dang Wangi – Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman
  11. Jalan Raja Laut – Jalan Dang Wangi
  12. Jalan Raja Laut – Jalan Sultan Ismail

According to the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, road closures and diversions at intersections in KL will begin at 9pm on 30th January from the Sri Maha Mariamman Dhevasthanam Temple on Jalan Tun HS Lee towards the Sri Subramaniar Swamy Temple in Batu Caves.

The chariot’s journey back is scheduled to begin at 3pm on 2nd February, with traffic diversions and road closures at these intersections anticipated to conclude by 4am on 3rd February.

Authorities have recommended that motorists steer clear of key routes, including DUKE, NKVE, Jalan Kuching, Jalan Gombak, and Jalan Sungai Tua, during Thaipusam to minimise traffic jams coming from Rawang and Selayang.
