TUG Gelato by The Unusual Greens
Ice cream is already irresistible on its own. But pair it with another sweet treat and you have a mouthwatering combo that’s hard to beat in our country’s unrelenting daytime heat. Over in Seri Kembangan, there’s a newly opened gelato spot called TUG Gelato that serves daifuku gelato – an indulgent dessert that brings together frozen gelato and sticky mochi rice cake.
Here’s what you can find at this dessert shop:
Over 15 gelato flavours to have in a cup, cone or with mochi
Daifuku is a popular Japanese dessert comprising mochi bun stuffed with a filling, typically red bean. At TUG Gelato, they’ve added their own twist to this sweet treat by wrapping gelato with mochi. The result is a crowd-pleasing dessert with satisfying mochi pulls that you’ve probably seen on your IG feed.
Your order of daifuku gelato starts with choosing a gelato flavour. There are over 15 of them to choose from – if you’re an indecisive person, head to the counter where the shop’s gelato are displayed and ask the staff for recommendations.
You can also try the flavours out before settling on one that you like. Find sweet classics such as Strawberry Cheesecake and 72% Dark Chocolate, to unique ones like Croissant and Brown Butter. If you fancy fruity desserts, take your pick of Mango, Raspberry, or Soursop Calamansi.
Once you’ve picked out a gelato flavour, a staff will proceed to scoop a large portion of the gelato onto a thin layer of mochi. The whole thing will then get wrapped, shaped into a ball, and served in a cup.
During our visit, we ordered a single-scoop Matcha Mochi (RM12) that’s perfect for those who prefer their desserts on the less sweet side. It had a hint of bitterness from the tea-based gelato made with Niko Neko Matcha, and IG-worthy pulls from the thin layer of mochi.
We couldn’t resist having another serving of gelato, so we ordered a scoop of their Avocado Pistachio in a cup (RM9). The dessert shop prides itself on using imperfect fruits to make their gelato flavours to help reduce food waste.
The Milk Sorbet with Hazelnut Crumble & Berries (RM15) is another plated dessert worth ordering – the sorbet was silky smooth, and paired nicely with the nutty crumble and tart berries.
Ambience at TUG Gelato
Find TUG Gelato tucked away on the second floor of a shoplot in Seri Kembangan, above a Chinese restaurant. You’ll know you’re at the right place when you spot a cheeky sign overhead that reads “You’re just one scoop away…”.
After you’ve made your way up a set of vibrant green stairs, you’ll be greeted by several retro-orange arches that lead into the dessert shop, which boasts a charming all-white dining area with splashes of oranges and yellows.
Cool off with a variety of gelato flavours at TUG Gelato
