Japan’s Warabimochi Kamakura Now Permanently Open At Mid Valley With Kinako-Dusted Mochi Dessert

Warabimochi Kamakura at Mid Valley Megamall

The options for Japanese food in Malaysia are almost endless. But when it’s strictly desserts, one traditional Japanese confection usually stands out: the silky-soft warabimochi, a mochi dessert dusted with soybean powder.

While it’s not a new thing here, there is a new spot to try the popular treat in KL – Warabimochi Kamakura. The Japan-famous speciality store for warabimochi just opened their first permanent shop at Mid Valley Megamall, following a pop-up at Bangsar’s APW.

Two new branches in KL

Warabimochi Kamakura operates over 50 stores in Japan, with outposts across Asia. They’ve expanded into Malaysia in 2025, with a permanent kiosk in Mid Valley Megamall opened on 20th March.

Another branch is set to open at Pavilion KL by the end of the month. For now, you can order their specialities at their Mid Valley branch at Lot LGK-06, a kiosk operating for takeaways located across the Harvey Norman outlet in the mall.

Must-try specialities at Warabimochi Kamakura

The warabimochi is a no-brainer to order here. The jelly-like, mochi dessert from Warabimochi Kamakura is made with 100% bracken starch, and topped with premium toasty and nutty kinako, or soybean powder, and kuromitsu, a Japanese black sugar syrup made with brown sugar.

The subtly-sweet, melt-on-your-tongue dessert is sold in a box of 5 for RM26 or 10 for RM43. If you’re just here to try the warabimochi out for yourself, you can also opt for a 2-piece cup for RM14.

Beyond the mochi dessert, the store also has unique warabimochi drinks: the creamy Strawberry Milk (RM22), grassy-note Asakawa-en Matcha (RM20), and the caramel-rich Tenku no Houjicha (RM20). These drinks have bits of warabimochi at the bottom of the cup to slurp up, much like a bubble tea beverage.

For purists, there’s also a selection of drinks to sip on without the chewy bits, the Matcha Latte and Houjicha Latte for RM15 each.
