There’s hardly a boring day in Klang Valley. From trying out weird food combos to getting drenched at a water park, there are all sorts of events awaiting those opting to ditch their pyjamas for a weekend outing – think rocking a sarong as part of your OOTD and discovering art at a local gallery.

1. Krystal Valley Exhibition @ National Art Gallery

Local artist Jun Ong is inviting arts and culture lovers to immerse themselves in a dazzling world of crystals in his latest installation, Krystal Valley. Held at the National Art Gallery in KL, the exhibition features a once manmade landfill transformed into a glowing valley of rocks, infused with the stories of change.

Ong’s brilliance shines through in the mixed media masterpieces on display, where everyday objects and crystal-like forms come together in perfect harmony.

2. Keretapi Sarong

Picture this – a flash mob of fun, tradition, and plenty of sarong flair, all while hopping on and off LRT and MRT trains. Join this fun by taking part in the 8th edition of Keretapi Sarong that’s happening this Sunday.

Drape yourself in your best sarong and hop aboard selected trains for a colourful ride through KL. This year’s theme is Bangga Malaysia, just in time for Malaysia Day. The festivities for the day will begin with gathering at designated stations in the city to join others and form a team at 8.30am, and then travelling to a secret location that’s only revealed on the day of the event.

3. Level Up Play

Level Up Play is the ultimate playground for gamers, animation lovers, trading card enthusiasts, and even the casual gamer and families with kiddos. The event celebrates the best digital content in Malaysia, as well as from Southeast Asia and beyond, with animators, tabletop game-makers, indie games companies, gadget and tech brands, and more having booths here.

The exhibitor booths are spread out across seven halls at the venue, with each one dedicated to a specific type of interest like cutting-edge games, esports tournaments, and animation. There’s also a main stage where meet and greets, live performances, and game showcases take place.

4. Crayon Shin-Chan Experience

Step into the cheeky world of Crayon Shin-Chan at the Crayon Shin-Chan Experience exhibition in Pavilion Bukit Jalil. It comprises five immersive photo zones that have statues and cutouts of Shin-Chan and his friends.

There’s also rtail area with over 100 exclusive apparel, collectibles, and more, as well as a cafe with food and drinks themed around Crayon Shin-Chan.

5. Beyond Fabrics @ The Drawing Room

Step into Beyond Fabrics, a culturally-rich exhibition by Dani Omar and Yoss Yoseff where every painted thread tells a tale. Hosted at The Drawing Room, Yap Ah Shak House, the artworks displayed are a feast for the senses, celebrating the intricate beauty and stories woven into each textile and intricate weave.

6. The Avantgardey Asia Tour

The Avantgardey Asia Tour is making a stop in Malaysia at Pavilion KL on 15th September. The free press conference by the all-female Japanese dance group will take place at the mall’s main entrance, near the Crystal Fountain from 7pm to 8pm.

Fans can look forward to a show brimming with energy, creativity, and jaw-dropping moves from the American’s Got Talent Season 18 finalist.

7. Selangor Aviation Show

Get ready to soar at the 4th edition of the Selangor Aviation Show (SAS 2024), taking off from 12th to 14th September at SkyPark Regional Aviation Centre. With around 32,000 aviation enthusiasts expected to attend, this event is set to be a high-flying extravaganza.

For a smooth ride to the show, be sure to head over to Registration B to scan the check-in QR code, grab your wristband, and breeze through a standard security check. And don’t forget to dress for the occasion – closed-toe shoes are a must for safety.

8. Celebrate Hari Malaysia @ Harta Space

Fans of mind-bending sci-fi movies can head to Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac) this weekend to catch Yusof Bakar’s Trilogi Bulan. This thrilling play explores survival, humanity, and the quest for paradise in a post-apocalyptic future, blending intense drama with thought-provoking themes. As you witness the characters grapple with survival on the moon, you’ll be left questioning what it really means to be human.

If you love getting crafty, head to APS Art Fair where art pieces meet hands-on creativity. Hosted by APS Online Gallery, this art fair is packed with everything from Soft Pastel Portraits to Caricature Sessions, ensuring a day full of artistic flair. There’s also a playground of workshops to try your hand at calligraphy, watercolour and acrylic painting, and more.

11. Exploring Local Art 2.0

Explore Malaysian culture in miniature form at the Exploring Local Art 2.0 exhibition at The Gardens Mall. It has glass cases holding dioramas depicting daily scenes of local life, including an 11-foot-long piece that captures Malaysia’s rich cultural diversity.

The dioramas are done by local artists including Eric Siow and Puiwan Lim, who created a collection of miniature models inspired by moments of their lives and nostalgic scenes in Malaysian cultures, such as a sundry shop, dim sum parlour, and provision stall.

12. Snooze Fest @ IKEA

In September, trips to IKEA might not just be about shopping for furniture or munching on meatballs. Their annual Snooze Fest makes its return on 7th September with a lineup of fun activities at all IKEA branches nationwide – they include a nap competition on their showroom beds.

Catch a Lullaby Session to hear local acts like Yuna and Zee Avi perform on selected days, or the Pyjama Day to claim a free nasi lemak from IKEA’s restaurant simply by dressing up in your pyjamas. The latter event takes place on the weekends during the festival period, between 9.30am and 10.30am.

For early birds, there’s a Morning Yoga & Free Breakfast session that happens at 8am. You’ll have to register online for this here.

Putting the snooze in the festival is the Power Nap Showdown. Nappers will compete to flex their napping skills while being challenged by fun distractions – potentially shoppers gawking at you – and win prizes if they’re the best napper. This event takes place every weekend during the festival dates, from 2pm to 3pm.

13. Bichi Mao In Wonderland

Bichi Mao, the adorable chonky cat by Malaysian artist Olive Yong, has a solo exhibition Bichi Mao in Wonderland at GMBB. Whether you’re familiar with the relatable comics featuring the orange kitty or not, young and old alike will enjoy a trip to the free-entry exhibition. It has five Bichi Mao-themed photo corners and original artworks displayed.

If you would like to bring home Bichi Mao merch or share the love of the cat, there’s a merch shop with stickers, apparel, and more, as well as a mailing Mao Express corner to write and send postcards.

14. Art & Symphony: The Immersive Journey

If you had a blast at Van Gogh Alive, you’ll be sure to enjoy Art & Symphony: The Immersive Journey too. Held at Fahrenheit88, the multi-sensory exhibition has immersive floor-to-ceiling projections of Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet masterpieces.

15. Augmented Reality Festival KL

There’s no better time than now to play tourist in KL, with the first Augmented Reality Festival Kuala Lumpur 2024 happening now. The city centre of KL is the venue for this festival, with QR codes strategically placed at different hotspots around the city to discover.

Spend a day searching for them, and scan the codes to watch popular murals like the ones at Kwai Chai Hong come to life, or digital sculptures hover over landmarks like The Starhill. At Dataran Merdeka, in particular, you can have a virtual tour guide join in on your explorations to explain more about local heritage.

16. IVE Switch Pop-up

After making its debut in Seoul in May, the IVE Switch Pop-up is here in Kuala Lumpur for one month only. Malaysian DIVE, or fans of K-pop girl group IVE, can dive into a collection of merch that’s part of the PLAY LINE FRIENDS pop-up at Fahrenheit88.

Find acrylic keychains, minive minini plushies, photo-holder keyrings, photocard sets, and more at the store. To sweeten things for fans, shoppers who spend more than RM160 in a single receipt will get to receive a free random photocard of the group.

You can never get too old for a trip to a fun fair – haunted houses and roller coasters aren’t just for the kiddos, after all. From now till 22nd September, Happy Fun Park is welcoming visitors of all ages to their location at Sanctuary Mall.

The rides here range from carnival games and a Ferris Wheel, to more thrilling ones such as bumper cars and a haunted house. Entry to the fun fair is free, but tokens to ride the attractions costs between RM2-RM10.

Discover Twilight, the latest marvel in a series of rotating exhibitions that blend time and emotion through stunning artistic displays at KL’s REXPERIENCE.

This season’s showing includes an immersive experience of Hanya Batik with visuals by Arif Rafhan, Geometry of Emotions which explores human emotions through geometric and organic forms, and Escape that let’s visitors experience a stunning audiovisual performance.
