Être Patisserie: Legit French Pastries & Desserts In KL Made By Michelin-Trained Malaysian Chef Ann

It is always a proud moment to bring something learned abroad back home. For Chef Ann, that means her years of training at Le Cordon Bleu Paris and working in Michelin-starred restaurants across France – all baked into Être Patisserie’s French pastries such as canelés and croissants.

First opened in Ipoh, the pastry shop has since expanded with an outlet in Kampung Baru in Kuala Lumpur.

Curious, we visited their KL branch to try their pastries and bring you this review.


Ambience at Être Patisserie


The air inside Être Patisserie smelt like a fancy hotel – we instinctively became a bit more genteel.

We could picture someone enjoying afternoon tea while flipping through a novel in the peaceful atmosphere. Even the soft clink of a knife cutting into a pastry echoed through the space.

A huge U-shaped bar counter is placed right at the centre in front of the entrance, making sure everyone who walks in can’t miss their Petit Fours (from RM22), Kouign-Amann (from RM10), macaroons (from RM8.50), and quiches (from RM15) – simply all the sweet and savoury French pastries that you can think of.

If you want more than just a light bite, they also offer hearty sandwiches (RM25) filled with ingredients such as tuna, truffle, and egg.

But here are some of our picks during our visit.


Mango


We paused for a second to admire the realistic design of the Mango (RM29). From the curved shape to the tiny leaves on top, it was not a real mango, but nothing about it that didn’t look like one.

The white chocolate shell cracks open to reveal a filling of passion fruit, kaffir lime, and Cambodian red pepper, according to the menu. In reality, we detected the flavours of passion fruit and yoghurt. Nonetheless, it was deliciously tangy and fruity, with a touch of sweetness from the shell.


Four Cheese


Four Cheese at Etre Patisserie

Four Cheese (RM13.40) is made with just that – Gruyère, Padano, Parmesan, and blue cheese. It felt like munching on cheese in bread form, not cheesy bread. The taste was all cheese, through and through. It certainly lived up to its cheesy promise and we were absolutely living it.


Pain Au Pistachio


Pain Au Pistachio

Pain Au Pistachio (RM16.80) is crowned with crushed pistachios, all held together by a rich pistachio paste. The flavour was righteously nutty and sweet.

Texture-wise, layers of flaky crust on the outside with a soft and fluffy interior offered a satisfying bite.

When the chef’s background is impressive, high expectations are naturally expected. The pastries we had delivered on that promise. Safe to say, you can count on Etre Patisserie for top-tier French pastries.
