ACG Base at LaLaport BBCC
Anime culture is pretty much mainstream these days, and we’re all for it. More blind boxes of our favourite complex characters and themed experiences around underground and popular animations? Yes, please.
Another plus side – we don’t have to travel far to lovingly geek out over our obsession.
In Malaysia, we now have ACG Base at KL’s LaLaport BBCC, which is basically our own little piece of Tokyo’s Akihabara. The mall’s 2nd floor has recently been occupied by over 20 shops full of goodies and themed food centred on anime, comics, and games – or ACG, for short – including Malaysia’s first Animate cafe and permanent store.

To get to LaLaport BBCC, hop off at Hang Tuah Monorail/LRT Station. The shopping mall is a short 3-minute walk from the station. Once inside the mall, go to the East Atrium and head up to Level 2 via escalator or lift, and you’ll find ACG Base.
Other anime shops can also be found in the same wing, on LG1, the Ground Floor, and on Level 1. We recommend taking the escalator up so you don’t miss out on these.
What to expect at ACG Base?
A permanent Animate & Malaysia’s first Animate Cafe
There are three stores at ACG Base with the name Animate, but each one differs in terms of offerings.

The star of the show is Animate, the Malaysian outpost of the largest anime, manga, and game merch retailer in Japan. Here you’ll find everything from wallet-friendly acrylics and badges to animation vinyls and manga art books. Manga titles are also available, in Japanese and English.

We spotted merch from series like Neon Genesis Evangelion and Haikyuu!! and games such as HoYoverse’s Genshin Impact and Square Enix’s Final Fantasy. A lot of the items here are sold in blind packs, but it’s all part of the fun of buying and trading with fellow otakus.
Animate Cafe launched with a ‘Detective Conan’ collab.
On LG1, there’s Malaysia’s first Animate Cafe. Similar to its Japanese counterpart, it offers anime-themed drinks that come with themed deco and freebies. Themes are rotated regularly, so keep your eyes peeled on the cafe for your favourite anime to make an appearance.
One floor up, Animate The Only Shop hosts limited-time events for various ACG. Shop a wider range of merchandise from specific titles here, with pop-ups for Neon Genesis Evangelion and Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun part of its lineup.
Cafes with rotating themes & Japanese-inspired eats
If you have a hankering for food after all that shopping, indulge in themed meals from one of several cafes at ACG Base.

Dimension Poptown hosts themed cafes in cities like New York, Singapore, and it’s now hit KL. The Malaysian store currently has two simultaneous pop-ups for Korea’s T1 Cafe and manhua Heaven Official’s Blessing, with themed food that comes with freebies, plus a merch collection.

Doko Koko Cafe is another collaborative cafe that switches out anime themes every few months. Popular anime collabs they’ve had in the past include My Hero Academia and Haikyu!!.

Japan’s ORBcafe at ACG Base, at the mall’s Gourmet Street, is set to offer themed anime food too, with a new collaboration coming. And if you’re a desserts-only foodie, Mori Mory offers Japanese-inspired bites like cheesecakes and choux pastries – not themed, but delicious and reasonably priced nevertheless.
Affordable mangas, niche anime merch & blind boxes

Doko Koko is already a familiar name among LaLaport BBCC frequenters. There’s now a bigger Doko Koko Goods that spans 2 floors in the East Atrium that boasts a range of anime goods from series like Spy x Family, Dandadan, and Haikyuu!!.

If donghua is more your vibe, there’s a corner just for BiliBili titles too.

There are also shops here with goods for those into less mainstream anime.
Nullset Goods has a treasure trove of items from the beloved 2012 romance classic Kamisama Kiss, including chibi plushes of Nanami and Tomoe. And at Xumi Goods, there’s a solid spread of anime and video game merch, including items featuring Persona 5 and the Phantom Thieves.

K+ by Kadokawa Gempak Starz sells anime stuff too, but the shop is better known for its local and Japanese comic title offerings. Highlights include Malay translations of popular manga such as Solo Leveling, Bungo Stray Dogs, and Blue Lock, reasonably priced from RM16.
We also spotted a special collab between K+ and Delicious in Dungeon, with merch of its beloved characters like Laios and Chilchuck Tims trying laksa and nasi lemak.

For the kawaii-obsessed, The Pink Room is for you. The aptly named, pastel-pink store carries blind boxes and brick sets from Sanrio, Peanuts, and Pokémon. You can also pop into a Sanrio-themed photobooth here and try your luck at claw machines to bag Sanrio plushes.

Stretching across three shoplots, Q Pocket is another collector’s paradise. It carries a range of blind boxes, including popular selections from POPMART. Labubus aside, you can also shop trendy lifestyle accessories, like bracelets, charm necklaces, sunglasses, and tote bags.

Shop for a variety of trading cards from Pokémon and One Piece from Kaadoya, and figurines and plush toys from MxD Hobby. Both stores are ideal for collectors who want to get their hands on the rare selection of anime goods.
Upcoming stores at ACG Base
While otakus can easily spend a whole day at ACG Base, there are more shops to look out for, including gunpla haven Kobo 7, video game-themed VibeMax, and a dedicated Godzilla Store.

Photoism PLAY, where you can take fun solo photobooth shots or with artists and anime frames, and KLP48 Theatre, a dedicated performance space for the Malaysian idol girl group, KLP48, will also be part of the directory list soon.
