This Cheras Dessert Shop Has Coriander Bingsu With The Leaf As A Topping & It Actually Tastes Good

WEEEE By Welemon in Cheras

With a bright yellow signage and the word “bingsu” plastered across its glass windows and doors, it’s not hard to tell what WEEEE By Welemon specialises in: Korean-style shaved ice, also known as bingsu.

While most shaved ice spots in Malaysia stick to classic flavours like matcha and strawberry, this dessert shop in Cheras stands out for serving a divisive coriander bingsu that has everyone’s attention – including ours.

Curious, we dropped by the shop to try the eye-catching dessert and bring you this review.

The food at WEEEE by Welemon

WEEEE By Welemon serves over 15 varieties of bingsu, including fruit-based flavours such as watermelon and blueberries, and also coriander, under their Premium Series Bingsu lineup. These stand out from the other nine go-to bingsu flavours they can whip up too, like matcha, tiramisu, and strawberry.

Each order of bingsu comes with a choice of three toppings, with options that range from various jellies like aiyu jelly, grass jelly, or coconut jelly to red bean, taro balls, and crushed peanuts.

Here’s what we ordered:

Coriander Bingsu

Some people find that coriander tastes like soap, while others experience it as a bright blend of earthiness and zestiness. We fall into the latter camp, but even so, we can’t stop our eyebrows from raising over WEEEE by Welemon’s Coriander Bingsu (RM20).

While the herb is mostly used in savoury dishes in Asia, it’s seldom associated with desserts, which makes the bingsu all the more intriguing – or controversial, if you will.

What arrived at our table was a towering mound of fluffy, verdant shaved ice. A generous crown of fresh coriander, with leaf and stems all left intact, sits atop the dessert. On the side, several plump halved Shine Muscat grapes dot the surface like jewels.

While the smell that wafted through our table was undeniably the fragrance of coriander, the bingsu’s taste was a curveball. Rather than having an aggressive grassy punch, the coriander flavour took more of a backseat role.

The overall profile leans into zesty and refreshingly sweet, with a subtle sourness that brightens the palate. The bingsu is not overpoweringly coriander-forward. Instead, the herb is accompanied by notes of mint, lemongrass, and lemon.

The crisp grapes prove to be more than just decoration. Their tartness and juiciness cut through the sweetness of the bingsu, adding bursts of acidity that keep each spoonful interesting.

The combination of tart grapes, fluffy ice, and that unexpected herby-citrus combo makes the coriander bingsu a standout. It’s a dessert that presents itself as an eye-boggling “why, just why?”, but surprises and somehow satisfies. It’s a must-try for adventurous eaters and those looking to experience a familiar ingredient in an entirely new light.

Oolong Milk Tea Bingsu

For those seeking something more refined, and – ahem – less controversial, the Oolong Milk Tea Bingsu (RM25) delivers a tea-forward experience.

The shaved ice arrives with the same cloud-like fluffiness, but this time, infused with a pronounced oolong milk tea flavour without veering into cloying sweetness. Upon first bite, oolong tea notes are apparent, delivering that distinct floral and slightly roasted quality that oolong tea is known for.

Tiny brown jelly jewels are scattered throughout the fluffy mound of ice that tastes unmistakably of tea. To our surprise, there were hidden jelly bits tucked inside this pillowy soft shaved ice, too, which provided an additional texture to each spoonful of shaved ice.

We also opted for three different toppings—red bean, grass jelly, and aiyu jelly—which amped up the bingsu into a more textured experience.

Perched on the side is a substantial slab of yellow creme brulee jelly, its caramelised top providing a satisfying crunch that contrasts well with the bouncy jelly and soft ice. The dish’s components come together to create a harmonious bowl of bingsu that tea lovers will appreciate.

Smiley Egg Puffs

Apart from icy bingsu, we also ordered a dozen smiley egg puffs (RM13.90) comprising two original and unfilled egg puffs, as well as ones packed with taro and chicken floss – all with a cute smile and dotted eyes embedded on their “faces”.

The chicken floss egg puff was generously filled to the brim. The strands of savoury chicken floss provided a tasty and savoury contrast to the slightly sweet and eggy puff.

Likewise, the taro-filled egg puffs oozed with their purple taro contents and gave the egg puffs a sweet, nutty flavour.

Apart from the filled egg puffs, our favourites were the original egg puffs. Despite having no filling, these plain puffs were fluffy with chewy firmness. The taste of the batter was more pronounced, boasting French toast vibes with eggy and vanilla notes as the main flavour profile.

Ambience at WEEEE by Welemon

Red brick and untouched concrete define WEEEE by Welemon’s space, while steel bars and a metal stairwell leading to a loft seating area complete the industrial aesthetic.

The ambience and seating options may be simple, but it’s cosy enough for small groups to settle in and dig into a bowl of icy bingsu and their other desserts.

The verdict

WEEEE by Welemon proves that bingsu doesn’t have to play it safe. Their coriander bingsu is a bold, refreshing creation that manages to be both unusual and delightful.

So, whether you’re a coriander lover or simply curious about what happens when herbs meet dessert, this is one bingsu experience worth seeking out.
