Amachi Palagaram in USJ 11
When debating where to have appams for breakfast, lunch, or dinner in Klang Valley, Amachi Palagaram will likely be mentioned.
The husband-and-wife owners of this establishment used to prepare and serve the South Indian treat from their home kitchen on the weekends, satisfying patrons who didn’t mind getting their fingers sticky from scrumptiously crisp rice crepes in a literal living room. The duo now operates a cafe in USJ 11, moving the business out of their home, but delivering the same sweet and savoury appams that many have come to vouch for.
The food at Amachi Palagaram
There are just five variations of South Indian appams and a signature masala tea on Amachi Palagaram’s menu. But you’ll hear no complaints about the small range of offerings from even their long-time patrons.
At the front of house, an order for the star dish starts with scanning a QR code menu. And at the back of house, the appam starts with a light batter made from fermented rice flour, which gives each yield a gently sour touch.
The runny batter gets carefully poured into a pan, with just enough to go around to establish a cushiony centre and a wafer-thin edge. You’ll definitely want to ditch the fork and enjoy the different textures of this heavenly dish with your fingers.
Egg Appam with Coconut Sambal
The Egg Appam with Coconut Sambal (RM7) is the most “extravagant” dish on the menu. A runny egg seasoned with crushed black pepper sits on the pillowy heart of this appam.
You can also get two eggs for RM8.
Mounds of bright-orange, fragrant coconut sambal are spooned on top, adding an extra layer of crunch and spice to the already tasty and crispy crepe.
Paal Appam
The Paal Appam (RM4.50), or coconut milk appam, is given another pour of extra coconut milk on top of the batter during the cooking process.
The result? Fluffy appam with a crisp rim that looks deceivingly simple, but satisfies with subtle sweetness from the coconut – no add-ons required with this one.
Paal Appam with Jaggery
This one is not just for those with a sweet tooth. With a nice burnished colour from the jaggery, or palm sugar, the classic Paal Appam is made just a little sweeter with the addition.
You can get this for RM5.50.
Ambience at Amachi Palagaram
Amachi Palagaram retains its no-frills flair. Just a handful of decor items that remind you of someone’s softly decorated home, and yellow lighting that makes you want to linger a little bit longer over a meal that’ll take most diners a minute to finish.
There are more seats to accommodate patrons at its new cafe space, but do be warned – they tend to fill up quickly, so come early to secure yourself a seat.
