Bon Odori Festival Returns On 27th July At LaLaport BBCC, With Live Performances By J-Pop Idols AKB48

Bon Odori Festival 2024

It’s that time of the year again – the highly anticipated Bon Odori Festival is back, and it’s bigger and better as always. Celebrating all things Japanese, the jovial festival is returning to the Central Rooftop Garden of LaLaport Bukit Bintang City Centre (BBCC) in KL this year, for two whole days in July and in August.

Here’s what we know about it so far – including its usual activities and live performances.

Four whole days in July and August

On 27th and 28th July, as well as 3rd and 4th August, the annual Japanese summer festival will be held at LaLaport BBCC from 4pm to 10pm, and the public is welcome to join in on the fun for free as always.

Organised by The Japan Club of Kuala Lumpur, The Japanese School of Kuala Lumpur, and the Embassy of Japan, the festival serves as a way to foster and promote the cultural ties between Malaysia and Japan.

The event is a huge one that sees thousands of revellers every year. So, festival-goers are advised to be there as early as possible, as there will likely be a queue to enter the event. There isn’t a fixed dress code for the festival, but don a kimono or yukata to get into the full spirit of celebration – you’ll find many locals dressed up for the festival.

What to expect at Bon Odori Festival 2024

Once you’re in and amid the buzz of the festival, it’s a party at its merriest. Expect a vibrant atmosphere that brings all things Japanese to Malaysia – vibrant lanterns, lively music, and pop-up food stalls selling Japanese snacks and goodies.

Make sure you get the spots with the best view of the main stage at the rooftop garden, where the highlight of the event will be taking place – the Bon Odori dance.

The cultural dance sees performers in traditional Japanese garb taking centre stage on an elevated wooden space called a yagura, swaying to the beat of traditional Japanese drums or taiko that plays the tunes of folk songs. The event is a welcomed recreation for folks – two left feet or not, you are welcomed to join in on the liveliness and follow along with the dances.

Another highlight to look out for is a live performance by J-pop idol girl group AKB48 – fans can expect a long and fun night of sing-alongs and dance-alongs.
