7,857 New COVID-19 Cases In M'sia On 27th May Marks A New Record

7,857 new confirmed COVID-19 cases in Malaysia

On 27th May 2021, KKM reported 7,857 new confirmed COVID-19 cases in Malaysia, a new record high of daily cases since the start of the pandemic. This is the third consecutive day of cases breaching the 7,000 mark, putting the total number of cases in the country at 541,224.

Selangor records the most cases in M’sia

Of the total daily cases recorded today, Selangor had 2,675 new cases – the most cases recorded in a state nationwide.

Following after are the states of Sarawak (772), Kelantan (754), KL (561), Johor (549) and Kedah (441).

Perlis (6) and Putrajaya (12) are the only areas in Malaysia with new cases falling below the 100s.

Today’s record-high 7,857 new COVID-19 cases beats out yesterday’s recorded 7,478 new cases, which had been the highest daily count of confirmed cases in the country.

A chart shared by Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah on his official Facebook page shows previous days that recorded new highs of COVID-19 daily cases since the start of 2021. Today’s case count surpasses the previous dates as well.

Another chart shared by KKM on Twitter showed brought-in-dead (BID) cases per day in Malaysia. This number is based on the number of individuals who tested positive for COVID-19 before a post-mortem examination. Yesterday, 26th May, saw the addition of 8 cases, with 23rd May recording the highest number of 10 cases.

However, when previously mentioning BID cases before, the Health director-general did not state if they had died of COVID-19.

Update: A series of tweets shared by KKM on their official account lists out 3 scenarios that get counted as a BID case. The first case is if an individual exhibits symptoms and has medication for treatment, but didn’t undergo a COVID-19 test and was found dead. A second example sees an individual who tested positive for COVID-19, but died before being sent to the hospital or quarantine centre. The last case considered a BID case are anyone who have COVID-19 symptoms but did not get treatment for it.

In April 2021, there was a total of 35 BID cases. In May, as of yesterday, 26th May, there has been 93 such cases recorded.

According to Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba, another cause for concern that comes with the rise in cases is that more people aged between 20 and 40 are testing positive for COVID-19 in recent days, as reported by Malay Mail on 27th May.

There’s said to be a 15% increase of cases between the ages of 17 to 20 who are in critical condition requiring oxygen assistance.

Among the worries as well is the rise in sporadic cases, or cases that crop up in communities that aren’t linked to any clusters reported by KKM.

Earlier this month, it was reported that 80% of infections were sporadic cases, with Selangor, KL and Johor recording the most sporadic cases nationwide, as reported by The Edge Markets.

New high of 7,857 daily cases in Malaysia on 27th May

It’s worrisome to see an uptick in cases in Malaysia, with today’s record-high of 7,857 new cases breaking previous records. With a nationwide MCO in place that’s slated to end on 7th June, we can all do our best in helping to keep ourselves and those around us safe at this trying time by staying at home and only going out for essentials.
