The festival is set to kick things off with its opening celebration Six to Eleven, a two-night opening celebration that will fill Padang Kota Lama with dazzling light projections, larger-than-life illuminated puppets and a lively programme of performances.

On 1st and 2nd August, the landmark comes alive with breathtaking projection mapping across its iconic heritage buildings, as it does every year, marvelling visitors with a kaleidoscopic display of colours, patterns and moving visuals. The evening also features DJ sets, cultural performances, an art market showcasing local makers and interactive experiences

Theatrical plays

For theatre lovers, there will be a compelling selection of performances that explore thought-provoking themes, each with their own unique storytelling styles.

Matahari by ZXC Theatre Troupe explores humanity’s relationship with nature through a visually striking post-apocalyptic tale, while TEWAS: No Light at the End of the Tunnel uses powerful physical theatre to confront issues surrounding bullying, violence and survival within educational institutions.

Audiences can also look forward to Dream Space by South Korea’s Creative Group SSAK, an imaginative non-verbal performance combining puppetry, physical theatre and live music to create whimsically poetic landscapes.

Musical and cultural performances

Other programmes that celebrate heritage and culture with fresh artistic expressions include The Malaysian Real Book II: Past to Present, which brings together Malaysian jazz vocalists Ida Mariana, Janet Lee and Yon Lynn alongside the WVC Jazz Sextet, reimagining local songs through contemporary jazz influences.

Meanwhile, When Spirits Meet: The Rainbow Bridge and Ocean Chants offers audiences a journey into Taiwan’s indigenous traditions through music, movement and ritual storytelling.

Visual art installation and exhibitions

Beyond performances, the festival’s visual arts programme invites audiences to engage with artworks that examine themes of heritage, memory, nature and the relationship between people and their surroundings.

There’s the multidisciplinary exhibition Shifting Whispers by the artistic collective Parallax that offers an immersive visual experience of different artistic perspectives through a shared installation known as “The Nexus”.

Con-Temporary Art (CTA) by Joshua Kon and Arrvinraj is an experimental exhibition space presented as a miniature contemporary art gallery, while Artisan II by Low Chee Peng pays tribute to traditional workshops and skilled trades that once defined George Town’s streets.
