Ichiren No Tamashi in Sri Petaling

If we were to suggest a spot in KL to embark on a food adventure, it would be hands-down Sri Petaling. Bustling with restaurants, kopitiams, and night markets, this township is a haven for food enthusiasts – its abundant choices of food is likely to leave you in a dilemma as you decide on what to eat.

Among the plethora of eateries here is a humble-looking roadside stall called Ichiren No Tamashi, located right outside Alison Kopitiam. Japanese Omurice is nothing new to us, but what’s so special about this stall is that their Omurice will only cost you RM10.

Affordable Omurice with generous portions

When we think of super cheap food, a common assumption is that the portions must be small. But that’s not the case with Ichiren No Tamashi, as their Diced Chicken Omurice (RM10) is just as generous in size as a dish that would be served at a proper restaurant with four walls.

Ichiren No Tamashi - making omurice

Fluffy white rice takes centre stage, delicately blanketed by a swirly, runny omelette. On the side, you’ll find vegetables and golden-brown diced chicken. Finally, a generous amount of curry sauce is ladled out around the rice to complete the dish.

Our verdict

Ichiren No Tamashi - omurice

Besides their signature Diced Chicken Omurice, we also ordered their Chicken Cutlet Omurice, which was sold at a similarly affordable price of RM12.

Ichiren No Tamashi - fried chicken

Both diced chicken and chicken cutlet had a delightful texture that captured the true essence of fried chicken – crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside. The omelette, on the other hand, melded perfectly with the rice with its soft texture and buttery taste.

Ichiren No Tamashi - omurice curry sauce

The curry sauce was light yet well-seasoned, delivering just a good amount of heat and spice that didn’t make us sweat. Slightly different from Japanese curry which typically carries a hint of sweetness, it showcased a subtle Indian flair with a more pronounced savoury taste thanks to the variety of added spices.

Be it the fluffy omelette or the crispy fried chicken, the interplay of all the components on the plate was what made the Omurice so well-balanced and moreish.

Despite starting the business at 3.30pm, which is way past lunchtime, there is always a queue at Ichiren No Tamashi – and you’ll typically find the owners scurrying in and out of the stall, servicing customers.

Suffice to say, if you are intrigued to try out this delicious yet affordable Omurice, swing by the stall early as they sell out really fast.
