Malaysian finds stolen motorbike using GPS tracker
While vehicle theft isn’t as common an occurrence as road accidents in Malaysia, it does happen to some unlucky few. Fortunately, there are ways to safeguard yourself as one Malaysian man Wan Haziq did. His motorbike got stolen in Puchong, but he managed to retrieve it shortly after, thanks to the GPS tracker installed on his bike.
Stolen motorbike recovered in 2 hours
Haziq, who goes by the username @whaziqmahazir on Twitter, recounted the incident via a tweet that has since gone viral with over 19,000 retweets and 15,000 likes at the time of writing.
The tweet posted on 17th August in a mix of Malay and English read, “Does anyone want to install a GPS tracker? Please do so. It helped me track down my stolen motorcycle. I lost it at 5AM and found it back at 7AM. 2 stolen motorcycles were also found in the house. Big thanks to @PDRMsia for the full commitment.”
Benefits of a GPS tracker
Relieved by the turn of events, Haziq encouraged all bikers to install a GPS tracker on their vehicles, too.
He shared in the same Twitter thread that a GPS tracker has multiple benefits. It can record your travel history, track your speed, and activate the Killswitch – an emergency switch that cuts off the engine in the event of an emergency.
Where to buy a GPS tracker
Haziq also helpfully added that he bought his tracker and had it installed at Soon Hong Trading, a motorcycle repair shop located in Danau Kota, Kuala Lumpur.
He spent a total of RM310, inclusive of the installation fee and a ONEXOX sim card that’s valid for 28 months. The sim card is needed to transfer the data from the tracker to your phone via any vehicle tracking app.
Once the sim card expires, you can just buy another one and update the new number into your app.
Haziq also advised those who are interested to install a GPS tracker to engage professionals as the tracker needs to be attached in a hidden spot, particularly within the frame, under the cover set, or in places where the thief will need to take time to remove it.
GPS trackers are sold at most auto repair shops. You can also get it online from Shopee or Lazada starting from around RM159.
Safeguarding your vehicles with a GPS tracker
Losing your valuables can be a traumatising ordeal, and it is especially so if the valuable is something that’s not only expensive but essential to your daily routine – like your motorbike or car.
It’s also inconvenient and costly to replace a vehicle, so besides buying motor insurance, we can take a leaf from Haziq’s book and install a GPS tracker too. As he has shown, the GPS tracker can help you take action immediately should you lose your vehicle and prevent a big financial loss.
