Nando’s M’sia Reveals Reason Behind Sudden CNY & Hari Raya Greeting; Netizens Praise Wholesome Initiative

Nando’s Malaysia wholesome 2020 marketing stunt

It’s pretty much a unanimous agreement that 2020 has been a really tough year, with COVID-19 upending everyone’s travel plans and more. Which is why deeds of kindness go a long way in helping to spread positivity.

Nando’s Malaysia, which has always been in the spotlight for their cheeky marketing, decided to pull off another one of their funny antics on social media in a bid to lift the gloom that has been hanging over the year 2020.

Nando’s Malaysia wants to re-celebrate 2020

It all started with Nando’s Malaysia posting a Hari Raya and Chinese New Year greeting consecutively first on 26th and 27th September on their Twitter page.

Translated from Malay, their Hari Raya tweet read “Raya is the same no matter where you are, as long as you’re with family.”

The next day, they tweeted out another festive greeting. This time, they ushered in the year of the rat and wished everyone prosperity and luck for the coming year.

The tweet read, “Today we welcome the year of the Rat – it’s gonna be a year full of prosperity and luck! To everyone celebrating, especially the Rats out there, Happy Chinese New Year! [fire emoji]”

Nothing seems amiss with either of the thoughtful greetings, except for the fact that it was almost October, and both festive holidays had been celebrated months ago.

Predictably, netizens were scratching their heads over these out-of-the-blue festive greetings. Many joked and speculated that the admin probably did not double check their scheduled posts on social media, or that Nando’s internet speed seemed to be lagging behind by months.

On 28th September, a day after their Chinese New Year tweet, Nando’s finally came clean and revealed the reason behind their odd festive tweets. Turns out, the entire shenanigan was Nando’s attempt to stay positive in the face of a really bumpy year.

The tweet read, “It’s okay to say that 2020 has been one big surprise, but we’re here to spice things up for you! Watch [the video] till the end for a little surprise! [winking emoji] Who do you want to re-celebrate 2020 with? [fire emoji]”. And the reveal video accompanying the tweet mentioned that since we had to cancel most of our celebrations for the year, Nando’s decided to bring it all back and re-celebrate those missed occasions by giving their customers an RM10 off their Full Platter promo.

To claim the promotion, customers will simple have to flash a screenshot from the video at all Nando’s Malaysia outlets. The offer is valid until 1st November 2020.

Netizens praise wholesome initiative

Netizens had a good chuckle over Nando’s cheeky, but heartwarming marketing stunt. Many praised them for their efforts to brighten up people’s day, including Twitter user @Ecmf85 who commended their marketing team for their “heartwarming and uplifting video”. She even said that the video made her want to patronise Nando’s, even though she’s not a regular customer.

Another Redditor, ToxicologicalPasty chimed in saying that the wholesomeness of the campaign beats the RM10 discount. Hopefully people will acknowledge the purpose of the message and not be too fixated on the amount of discount.

Nando’s Malaysia injects positivity into the year with cheeky campaign

The objective of most marketing campaigns is to ultimately drive sales for the brand, but if they can spark a positive reaction and put a smile on people’s faces, it’s a win-win for all – as is apparent from Nando’s Malaysia’s Re-celebrate 2020 campaign. The best part is that we get to enjoy their yummy chicken for a cheaper price, but when you head out to claim the promotion, remember to practice social distancing and sanitise or wash your hands with soap before you dig in!
