PPE (personal protective equipment) is an abbreviation that’s been thrown around more than usual during Movement Control Order (MCO). As it helps keep frontliners safe while fighting COVID-19, hospitals have been going through them quickly, which means there’s a dire need of more PPE during this time.
This includes donations of DIY PPE from local communities, and those that’ve been hand-sewn by inmates. Further showing that nothing stops Malaysians from helping out in times of need, Norfarrah Syahirah Shaari, an OKU woman shared a video of how she has been sewing PPE using only her feet.

Norfarrah often posts videos on her YouTube page showing how she does ordinary things with just her feet, such as using her smartphone and folding her tudung. But she decided to upload a video of her making PPE for frontliners to Facebook after hearing that many were curious about her skills.
The 2-minute long video she shared on 11th April 2020 shows just how she does so alongside a team of 30 volunteers at Teluk Intan Community College in Perak. Sinar Harian reported that their DIY PPE will benefit Hospital Teluk Intan and Klinik Kesihatan Teluk Intan.
Caption: “A lot of people wanted to see how I sew with my feet. Okay, I will show my sewing skills using only my feet. I’m very excited to sew PPE for frontliners. This is all we volunteer seamstresses from Teluk Intan Community College can do to help out”.

While sewing is no easy task to begin with, Norfarrah makes it look effortless with just her feet. The video shows her neatly folding dark-blue fabrics for PPE gear, and holding them down in place with her feet and the help of a pair of scissors.

With one foot on the pedal of the sewing machine, and another guiding the fabric easily under the stitching needle, she makes the whole sewing process seem like a walk in the park.

OKU woman sews protective gear to help out a good cause
On 13th April 2020, the Health Ministry was quoted by The Star saying that medical staff are currently going through disposable protective gear 10 times more than usual. With enough PPE to last them for just 2 more weeks, all donations from volunteers are a welcomed sight.
This is why it’s heartwarming and inspiring to see individuals such as Norfarrah beating all odds to help sew gear for frontliners who are in need of PPE more than ever now.
