Joint efforts to rescue cat in lake
Cats are known to march to the beat of their own drums. But doing so can land them in sticky situations – as seen with this cat that was spotted by PDRM “illegally travelling” in a car bumper at an MCO-related roadblock some time back. Fortunately, Malaysians never fail to lend a helping hand to their feline friends.
Such is the case when this cat was found in a lake, which saw a PDRM and The People’s Volunteer Corps (RELA) officers, and a member of the public, joining hands – quite literally – to stage a rescue mission for it.
Human chain formed for rescue mission
Several photos of the whole ordeal were shared to Facebook page, Friends of PDRM, on 10th March 2021 where it swiftly racked up over 3,000 reactions in an hour. According to the caption, the rescue mission was carried out by Corporal Michael from Beseri Perlis Station, a RELA officer and an unnamed member of the public.
In the photos shared, the 3 men can be seen linking their arms to form a “human chain” to rescue a cat perched on a wooden plank under a bridge – which happens to be part of a Chinese-style bridge and pagoda at Tasik Melati Recreational Park in Perlis.

Videos shared by Rela Padang Besar on their Facebook page shows just how the incident began, with the police and RELA officers trying to coax the cat in the lake to grab onto a wooden structure instead of the pillar of the bridge that it is seen clinging onto.

In a second video shared by Rela Padang Besar in the same post, the member of the public is seen entering the scene with his jeans folded up and shoes off to help out the 2 officers and cat. Rather heroically, he climbed over the bridge’s railing – with no qualms – to offer a helping arm to the RELA officer, in hopes that he can reach further to grab the cat.
At one point in the video, it even looked like the man was ready to jump into the lake to save the cat after the refused to grab onto the wooden plank. Eventually, he managed to hold onto the RELA officer’s hand, which allowed the officer to stretch out further to reach the cat without the both of them having to get into the water.
The police officer can also be seen holding onto the RELA officer’s hand for support, forming a human chain between the 3. While that helped the RELA officer reach the cat, we assume that he couldn’t get a good grip on it as the video showed him trying various ways to pick up the cat with 1 hand.
Realising that, the PDRM officer put down a small white bucket that he had been holding onto – presumably to “catch” the cat should the RELA officer managed to get a hold of it – and reached for a bigger grey bucket nearby.

The RELA officer then used the grey bucket to try to scoop up the cat. The men’s persistent efforts finally paid off after over 5 minutes, as the RELA officer successfully nudged the cat into the safety of garbage container and bring it back on the bridge.

PDRM, RELA and man stage rescue for helpless cat
It’s always heart-warming to see strangers coming together to rescue helpless creatures stuck in unlikely predicaments. This one of the PDRM and RELA officers, and a member of the public, joining hands to stage a rescue mission for a cat that fell into a lake is no different, and it’s helping restore our faith in humanity.
