Sandolicious: Cookie Sandwiches With Unique Fillings Such As Truffle Sea Salt & Honey Chizu In KL

Sandolicious in Kuala Lumpur

Sandwiches as desserts aren’t all that odd. It’s an experience that’s just as fun and yummy as devouring their savoury cheese-and-ham counterparts, especially when there are a plethora of flavours involved.

If you’re sceptical of this statement, head over to Sandolicious – a cafe nestled in the heart of the hectic Petaling Street that serves dessert sandos of eccentric flavours, and prettied-up sweet drinks.

Leaving our cold limp sandwiches sitting in the office fridge, we joined the flurry of Chinatown in search of some cookie sandwiches instead.

Cookie sandwiches & elaborately decorated beverages

Sandolicious is a new venture of The Studio KL, an online dessert shop known for their dainty treats and bite-sized dessert boxes. Now, they operate a physical store tucked within the newly opened B Hotel, located smack dab in the heart of Petaling Street.

Sandolicious - cafe

Just as they do with their desserts, the cafe goes all out with their interior.

The space feels like a chic apartment living room – the combination of plush armchairs, quirky illustrated wallpaper, hanging pendant lights, expansive windows, and potted greens at various nooks, imbues an ambience that is cosy, sophisticated, and eclectic all at once.

Grab your spot at the stylish living room-style area, where snug cushioned chairs are yours to chill at. Or park yourself at the high seats by the window, that’ll give you a view of the hustle and bustle of Chinatown right below you.

We chose ours, and proceeded to order some pretty little sandwiches.

Here’s our verdict

Sandolicious - desserts

Sandolicious doesn’t play around when it comes to presentation – which could be why it took a hot minute before we were served our goods. Nevertheless, we were impressed by aesthetics of our dessert and drinks, and the effort that went into executing them.

Sandolicious - sandos

Our orders – four of their signature cookie sandos including the Truffle Sea Salt, Honey Chizu, Lychee Rose, and Caramelized Onion & Parmesan – arrived in an embellished display, each on their own porcelain pedestal.

We caved into the gothic allure of the Truffle Sea Salt and went for that one first. The cookie reminded us of a French sable, satisfyingly crisp and ideally sweet in all the right notes.

We were anticipating the cream cheese filling to hit us with the extra oomph as that was where most of the flavours lie, but it fell a little flat with the lack of truffle flavour and the overwhelming saltiness.

It was the Lychee Rose that blew us away. Infusing floral flavours in food can be tricky – there’s a fine line between deliciously fragrant and just…perfumey.

But Sandolicious nailed this flavour with that exquisitely piquant cream cheese filling bearing bits of lychee flesh, and a wispy rose aftertaste that enhances and not overwhelm the overall flavour.

Sandolicious - honey chizu

We moved on to the Honey Chizu, a flavour we were the most curious about.

This sando tasted somewhat like a sweet cheddar biscuit, with a sandwiched concoction that is richer, bolder and sharper than the others that we’ve tried.

Balancing out all the sweetness with something a little more savoury, we tried the Caramelised Onion & Parmesan next.

Sandolicious - caramelised onion

Instead of the cream cheese base used in the fillings of the previous cookies, this one was chock-full with pureed sauteed onions that was undeniably aromatic, and made a decent companion to the slightly sweet cookies. That said, we struggled to taste the parmesan.

Each sando is priced at RM7, but you can order a Double Pleasure (RM12.50) to enjoy any two flavours of your choice or a Box Of Heaven (RM54) for more selections – you’ll get to choose eight flavours with this box.

Sandolicious - drinks

Washing down all the treats are the cafe’s speciality drinks that were no less shabby than the sandos.

The Bailey (RM20) was a complex blend of the robust Hainanese coffee, a cheeky dose of the Irish cream, and – most intriguingly – bits of barley. Best bit – the coffee came topped with a cloud of cotton candy that resembles an adorable bear, all dressed up for Instagram.

Presented to us like a bouquet of flowers with actual flowers is the La Vie En Rose (RM20), a concoction of everything meant to make you pretty such as white fungus, goji berries, poached snow pears, and lemon syrup.

Overall, both drinks were nothing to shout about, but they were decent refreshments – and plus points for the visual effort.
